this thread will probably be empty, but I made it for anyone that wants to talk about the oddity that is Washington D.C. Go Go. Looking for more of it, both earlier stuff and current. Seems like something that is a lot more of a live thing, but I have been pretty impressed with some of the backyard bands recordings, especially their version of "sippin on some syrup".

A Chuck Brown set with Sly Stone guesting turned up recently on Dime. Prompted me to thinking about wanting to get some live Troublefunk since they cooked muchly at one point.
I'm hoping to be able to locate a vhs my little brother taped off British tv in the mid 80s with a live Troublefunk set on. He's in the crowd. will then transfer that to dvdr. It's also got a pretty good Black Uhuru set on but that's not relevant here.

Have also wondered if Osiris ever did anything as good as 'War On The Bullshit' since getting the NME GoGo compi that came with their release of the Good to Go soundtrack.

Some of the Trouble Funk stuff is excellent, probably Droppin' Bombs: The Definitive Trouble Funk set probably has all anyone would need.

I remember reading that Chuck Brown traced the Go Go beat back to some of the live music Grover Washington, Jr. was doing in the 70s. The live version of "Mister Magic" is the one to go for there. Brown's "We Need Some Money" and "Umm Umm Good" are old favourites around here.

I had a go go compilation cassette 20 years ago called Paint The White House Black. The only band I recall on it was Trouble Funk.

I lived in DC for a year so I'm a familiar. The strangest thing about it is that 6 year old kids in DC know more about GO GO than DJ Rupture and Burial combined. Obviously the biggest new guys are Mumbo Sauce and TBC. Just check out "Welcome to DC" and all the remixes and covers that follow and you will get a taste of what's going on now. It is, as you said, "a live thing." Especially since recently more and more GO GO bands have been backing rappers. Wale tours with TBC, I believe. I saw Ghostface backed by a GO GO band as well. As for stuff that is Post-James Brown and Pre-Mumbo Sauce --the "early" stuff-- I'm as lost as anyone.

In one of the seasons of The Wire, when Stringer Bell has to hook up with DC guys for some reason, he calls Go-Go "bullshit" or something like that. I was surprised to see the reference...just another example of how well written and researched that show was.

the actor who played slim charles is a pretty established gogo musician. i forget his name and his band.

Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers, Bustin' Loose (1979) is decidedly post-James Brown, and it's mostly very good, maybe his most consistent LP...it might have sounded a bit back-to-basics or retro in the light of disco and late-70s soul, but it has a lighter, P-funk-ish quality in the uptempo tracks. And there's a few percussion breaks thrown in to showcase the new rhythmic inflection. The horn parts are pretty agile and complex. The two ballads are a bit glossier in the typical style of the time but not very well realised in the song-craft department. The title tune at least is worth hearing, but I like a lot of it.

Anwan Glover from the wire indeed is one of the legends of Go Go, Backyard Band were the main pioneers of the Go Go band covering rap music sound.
