i hate indie rock
used very loosely, pop-rock music of the non-top-40 variety. i've stopped really following it at all, but i know there must be some good bands, albums, or shows going on currently. looking for new, catchy, nothing too experimental.
i like the new low album a lot. kid dakota is a somewhat related band with a more typical indie rock sound, and i think, great songwriting and musicianship. but besides minnesota stuff i have no idea what's good right now.

there was a period when i was listening to the local student radio a lot, before i started to work atthe new place. i'm pretty sure i heard The Hold Steady and The Arcade Fire and all of the much hyped bunch, and i guess if i don't remember any of it, there must be a reason. however, there is one recent indie album that i like a lot and i think is truly great, which is The National's Boxer.

I've liked some of the bands associated with the Stolen Recordings record label:
Wet Dog are kind of The Fall meets the Slits. I like em a lot.

Matthew Sawyer & The Ghosts are kind of Jonathan Richmany and Robyn Hitchcocky. I like some of their stuff.

Dallas Boner does unsavoury things to the indie song:

Not indie rock, but folk/blues stuff I've liked of late:

Polvo was a great guitar band from the 90s. Their EPs were reallly good as was this one album called Exploding Drawing I believe. indie no doubt.
I cleared my shelves of indie rock at the beginning of this year so I can't see anything to add, though off the top of my mind, Versus was a really fun indie pop band on merge I think. Come to think of it Merge is a great label for indie stuff, you've got Spoon, East River Pipe, and The Essex Green and etc.
Also when in existance Elephant Six was decent, and fun, but you had to look for their more obscure releases to truly appreciate them I believe. The Music Tapes put out an awesome 7" that's all about how televisions are taking over the Universe, and when I saw them live it was incredible because they had a model TV set on a podium that splurt out weird faces and they would jam in a crude yet pop oriented way that made the deal sealed!
Other than that who can go wrong with acts like 8-track Gorrilla or Early Modest Mouse i.e the fruit that ate itself EP. 8-track Gorilla is a guy from Athens I believe who toured with Har Mar Superstar (eek!) and karaokeyed random 80s pop songs while doing various other things with vintage 8 tracks.
I'm afraid I'm not really into a lot of the indie bands that are coming out now. Ecstatic Peace is probably a safe bet, but some of the bands out now are kinda faddy and unpredictable, and pale in comparison wtih true talent such as (I'd name a couple singer songwriters but I'm sure you'd be able to as well, like Stephin Merritt etc.) that it's kind of dissapointing if you're not just into certain indie band for their hipness cred, or because you can drink pabst blue ribbon at their shows. but gosh it's been a long while since I've been to a indie rock show. This year has been a dissapointing gig going year for me, and I'm still not sure what shows to go to and what not. But I've identified a couple of festivals that I'm going to limit myself into going unless persuaded otherwise those being: Terrastock No Fun, Vision Fest, Erstquake, and any Western Mass oriented music festivals. When things look better for me next year I'm making sure I go to all of those, instead of say lollapalooza or Sasquatch bleh.

for me, the indie pop/rock/whatever scene peaked in the mid nineties. i still listen to a lot of that stuff. in fact, VHF just issued a cd by Wingtip Sloat that contains their singles & comp tracks that is absolutely great. i rarely get interested in new indie bands of the Pitchfork generation - they all seem so 'faddy' now - maybe i'm just getting old....but yeah, check out that WINGTIP SLOAT cd.
not sure if they qualify, but battles is a great band. Just saw them play, which you should definitely do at any oppurtunity. (tyondai braxton, son of anthony braxton, is in the band, and is very very talented.) the overall level of musicianship in the band is impressive, to say the least. very dancy, very creative. great stuff.

I'd suggest Black Lips as well.. I really can't think of any other current bands right now.
I haven't really been into any current Indie music, but a lot of the stuff from the mid 80's to early/mid 90's was really great...
The Kind Of Jazz Music That Kills is someone I'd recommend too... not really Indie either, but kind of in the same category...
Thomas Function might be worth looking at too (I just noticed they're listed as friends on TKOJMTK's myspace)

"i dislike a large body of this music too. as far as rock goes, i come from more of a metal background and i cant stand a lot of indie singers, especially the guys. also, i just find a lot of the music boring and lame in general."
thats why there are other threads to post in.
I don't really know much about anything going on at the moment off the top of my head, only earlier stuff. I would like some recomendations myself. I've seen a few shows with some up and coming bands in Portland from folks I've grown up with and had a pretty awsome time. When I listen to the recordings of some of these bands though, I am less impressed. Maybe this kind of music is best kept live?
Ryan man, I KNOW you have more to say about shit like this.

yeah, same, that's why i'm asking the haters here for just one band that impressed you with their sound, or that has songs that you like... i'm personally not that interested in recommendations of bands from past decades.polyrhythmatics wrote:i cant stand a lot of indie singers, especially the guys. also, i just find a lot of the music boring and lame in general.

i could go on all night if we remove the "current" criteriondave quam wrote: Ryan man, I KNOW you have more to say about shit like this.
i'll just throw this one out for now, though its not so much 'indie rock' really:

The Hummingbirds - Love Buzz
"Word Gets Around", "Blush", "Alimony"... three of the best pop tunes ever. This record came out in like 90 or 91 and was completely forgotten about and it has boy/girl vocals and a totally wacky Mitch Easter production so HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
