How about the Community album, Lambkin's latest effort? oh yeah, WRONG FORUM

miss those days when people actually talked about music, or sound art

Yeah it is a shame there's less decent discussion around music etc these days. It's the way the web is general is going tho.
I'll probably leave my list 'til later when I'll have a bit of free time and may try to catch up on a few records and write a para about each.

haven't found enough to excite me for a proper list, so i'm interested in what people come up with. loren connors is still doing great work (duo with tom carter, a couple of shorter departed dreams etc.), there was the species pluralis usb stick and new toshiya tsunoda double, two good ones from grisha (shakhnes), but mainly indeed

this was the year that community and the room extended came out

(p.s. other good ones include from erstwhile: revert/rossetto and disanto/unami live; tapes from r. schwarz, debt of nature, and fergus kelly; vinyl by altar of flies; archival release: best of enema & gejonte ... (to be amended))

I've not bought or heard much this year - in fact I seem to have had the music from various pre school animations / sesame street sketches as earworms for most of the last 12 months - but here are some things that have stuck out so far:

Jin Sangtae - shadow boxer (popmusic25)
Joe Jones - Garden Party (edition telemark)
Mark Vernon - Lend an ear, leave a word (kye)
VA - Music of Xinjiang (sublime frequencies)
Christof Migone - Greatest Hits (squint press)
Jin Sangtae - d ear (popmusic25)
Michael Moser - Antiphon Stein (edition rz)

Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present (dir. Tyler Hubby)
Marginal Consort (live at St Johns church, Hackney)

Maja S.K. Ratkje – Crepuscular Hour
and
Danny Brown – Atrocity Exhibition

Crepuscular Hour is one of the most intense listening experiences I've ever had. Pupils dilated, sweaty palms, teary eyes, strong feelings of shame regarding my own attempts at music. And I've not even heard it in surround yet.

Lots of my favorite names released something this year, but many of them are simply good and do not rise to the ranks of "best of". To me, "best of" implies I want to recommend these things to you. I'm not going to bother pushing something that is merely okay. So far, this is how my list is stacking up. Things might get moved around here and there. I would like to say that I was quite pleased with the web presence this year. A couple of key reissues by Nostalgie De La Boue and discovering David Oliphant's bandcamp were a big deal (Life Garden, Maybe Mental). A lot of metal this year, which was a surprise.

Harley Flannagan - Cro-Mags (171-A Records, MVD Audio)
John Grzinich - Prevailing Wind, Tangled Under (Cronica) [web]
Inquisition - Blodshed Across the Empyrean Altar Beyond the Celestial Zenith (Season of Mist)
Noise - Demo Tapes 1991-1995 (SPHC)
Sir Richard Bishop and W. David Oliphant - Beyond All Defects - Eternal Rigpa Mix [web] (Life Garden, Maybe Mental)
Teitanblood - Accursed Skin (The Ajna Offensive)
Sedem Minut Strachu/Unconscious Disharmonic Malfunction (Bringer of Gore)
Sissy Spacek - Disfathom (Helicopter) [a 9+ minute 12"?]

reissues:
Avskum - s/t 2LP (Skrammel)
Harry Bertoia - Sonambient (Important)
Breakdown - The '87 Demo LP (Painkiller)
Chod - Kala-Nath (Nostalgie De La Boue) [web]
Chod - Psychotic Session (Nostalgie De La Boue) [web]
Yoshihiro Hiraoka & Human Arts - Shogakara Taigae (Kick Rock)
Skin Crime - Case studies in early taxidermy (Hospital Productions)
Slang - Devastation In The Void (Prank)

not heard:
Yannick Dauby - The Disaster Area (Semperflorens)
Halo Manash - Unetar (Aural Hypnox)
Halo Manash - Elemental Live Forms MMV - Initiation (Aural Hypnox)
Halo Manash - Walkeus (Aural Hypnox)
Halo Manash - We Dance Ourselves Into Nothing (Aural Hypnox)
Keith Rowe - The Room Extended (ErstSolo)
Skin Crime - The House On The Cliff (Self Abuse)
Tarab - Idée fixe (nonlinear)

honorable mention:
Asocial - Det Bittra Slutet (F.O.A.D.)
Brainbombs - Souvenirs (Skrammel)
Michel Chion - Musiques Concretes 1988-91 (Brocoli)
Funebrarum - Exhumation of the Ancient (Doomentia Records)
Jim Haynes - Throttle and Calibration (Cronica) [web]
Kinit Her - The Blooming World (Pesanta Urfolk/Vale of Tears)
Grave Miasma - Endless Pilgrimage (Profound Lore)
Sete Star Sept - Beast World (SPHC)
The Gerogerigegege - Moenai Hai (Eskimo)

Please note that the Process is a collaboration between Marvin Tate and Joseph Clayton Mills. Marvin's recordings are the primary material of the project.

I'd have to check to see, but I think only bought a single release from this year. So:

The Glowing Man - Swans

Which is a truly outstanding album.
