"The performance represented by this CD took place on 15th of May 2010 in the concert hall of the Jasło Cultural Centre in southern Poland. The concert began with John Tilbury using the piano to produce a gamelan-like quality, which was quickly followed by Eddie Prevost bowing a cymbal producing subtle metallic sounds. One could feel an electric atmosphere of concentration and note the exceptional care and elegance with which the performers selected even the tiniest details of the complex sound structure. Intriguing phrases from the prepared piano and sonorous tones from percussion instruments wafted around the huge expanse of the hall -- whose excellent acoustics let the audience immerse themselves in the music -- savouring the subtle sounds emerging from the silence. The changes within the slow stream of improvisation occurred in such a natural way introduced by either musician by turn. Sometimes a highly abstract motif seemed to be a logical development rather than a step into the unknown -- which in reality it was. The dominant impression was that such an advanced level of intuitive understanding between the two performers was the result of many years of collaboration. In my view each sound produced during the concert was not only 'desirable' but also essential (inevitable) and created its own profound aesthetic justification. Especially noteworthy was the compelling way in which both musicians made use of silence, whose role in AMM is as important as sound. The performance of a shorter or longer period of silence entailed the same creative intervention as did playing a sound or motif. i asked that same question to the label, and reply i got:

jason has had some copies available at a few live shows, but the tape should be officially released later on in november.

for the record the 'end of october' batch preceding that release hasn't come out yet either. lots to look forward to there.

Jason Lescalleet 'Music for Magnetic Tape' cassette on Arbor.

this one isn't all that remarkable. two ten minute pieces: the first side is nice, a subtly manipulated piano loop with a brief break into harsh feedback at the climax before settling back into the repeated desolate piano phrases. the other side is a drone that i find far too short to carry any weight. i played the first side once a day for a week until the tape snapped.

Not really forthcoming, as it's out and about now ( and might have been mentioned some pages back), but Jean Claude Eloy's 'Gaku No Michi' has just been (re)issued in it's 4 hour entirety for the first time.

@leroysghost: I actually found this cassette to be quite remarkable. The piano piece is really amazing and quite unexpected from Lescalleet. It's an extremely subtle piece that works on more than one level.
Also, it's not a loop-based recording. I don't know if Jason plays piano, or if it's a sampled recording of piano, but there's a song progression there that is more complex than a loop.

The B side is a beautiful ten-minute drone that feels like the perfect length to me. I love this cassette!

i didn't mean to imply that there was no progression, but it's almost certainly a loop (this is Lescalleet we're talking about, plus it's called Music for Magnetic Tape after all). iirc it repeats three times with different manipulations each time and with Lescalleet presumably grabbing the tape to make it briefly feedback at one point. it didn't strike me as particularly unexpected either, particularly after "Lucy Song".
