i was more into the duo with margarida at EQ, partially just for its genuine oddness/inscrutability and thought-provoking-ness.

I got it from ErstDist, who seem to still have it in stock. Definitely jump on it if Kissy is gone (I hadn't heard that). As for that Garcia set at EQ I am well on record with my thoughts on that. Unami was great in it but Garcia just couldn't connect and reacted in a boring way (running through her catalog of techniques). If you haven't already get the Stangl/Unami collab I was for an example of how an acoustic musican is able to play with Unami.

regarding the Music Overheard compilation, it is also available as an uncompressed, very nicely packaged double CD with booklet. and, it's, like, 10 bucks. i've got it up at my web site, and i'm sure you can get it from the ica, too.

all the tracks on cd 1 were created specifically for this comp. cd 2 contains a lot of previously released material, but tough to find.

anyway, the music was meant to be enjoyed, so consume as you see fit.

That's good to know Bhob - I'm listening to this now and the first three tracks have been fantastic. I definitely want this in high quality form.

that 3" series was editions of 50, so they are not easy to find. though i suppose unami wasn't very well known at the time.

it's on the list for my upcoming erst order! definitely. thanks for confirming.

just skimmed the EQ 2 thread a bit. . seems like thoughts ranged from terrible set to unami's fault to margarida's fault to several people clearly loving it as one of the few best sets. . . so. sounds like a great job to me!

i recently returned to cds. bought a music hall cd player, which makes a hell of a lot of difference in terms of pure sonic experience over your standard commercial cd players. there's a lot to be said (and not many people saying anything) about the D/A converters in a cd player.

but, money is money, and a lot of good music can stand up to not-so-great reproduction. best scenario is to not know what you're missing when you don't have the means to stop missing it.

You might be interested in the French net label Audioactivity (http://netlabel.audioactivity.net/navig ... ?page=home" onclick= "window.open(this.href);return false;).

I should note that I just released "variations for Bob Ostertag" on this net label.

Moscow avant-garde composer Nikita Golyshev (CD-R) is well known as a deep experimentalist, making micronoise and electroacoustic music that is in the cutting edge of any spotless mind. In "Vesna" (this means spring in Russian) CD-R curiously turns to his roots and presents a collection of tracks that can be conditionally described as "pure acid bacchanalia" or even "new rave movements".

Hard-edged electronica meets the times we can name as "the beginning". No computers were used during the recording process: only hardware synthesizers, samplers and an ancient Soviet effect-machine.

Vesna is an awaiting thing, that always returns. No matter how much snow is inder the window at the moment.

goddam - i listened to both of those today, and they are both fantastic!!! especiialy that LAUSE ensemble.

funny because at home i've been trying to get into the erikm \ tetrault \ otomo trio live from musica genera and i don't think that trio stacks up nearly as highly as LAUSE.

makes me eager for the upcoming erst duo of erik and dieb 8)

you and me both, I'm supposed to get dieter's mix any day now.

not sure if it was mentioned, but trente oiseaux has gone digital-only. it's on g?nter's myspace here, with an interesting back and forth below.

A future for trente oiseaux - web based music distribution
Current mood: optimistic
Category: Music

I've been thinking about the future of my label, trente oiseaux, for quite a while, so be prepared to read a rather long text...

Distributing music by the traditional channels has become increasingly difficult since I started trente oiseaux in 1995, and business has, over the last couple of years, dwindled to a point that I found myself facing debt rather than profit as my business result.

The most rational move would be to close the label down, but having invested too much time and energy in this project for over ten years makes it hard to face this perspective - on the other hand I do not have the funds to invest in producing more releases, and even reprinting titles than have run out, or soon will, is not an option.

In this situation, it seems best to go for a paradigm change and start distributing music without resorting to hardware sound carriers, transforming trente oiseaux into a web label. As I don't consider the quality of mp3 sufficient for my ( and the other trente oiseaux artists' ) music, I've decided to use the open source codec FLAC ( Free Lossless Audio Codec ) for online distribution.

FLAC is a data compression algorithm similar to WinZip on the Windows PC, or StuffIt on the Mac, but optimized for audio. Unlike these algorithms, FLAC files can be played by appropriate players as well as unpacked to Wave without loss, and re-encoded by any other codec ( ogg vorbis, my favorite, for instance, but also AAC for the iPod crowd ).

A FLAC file can thus be decoded to Wave and burned as a full-fledged CD, played by a computer or portable player, or encoded to be played on all kinds of portable audio players. Software for encoding and decoding, as well as audio players to play FLAC files on a computer are readily available as freeware, and there is a number of portable DMPs that can play them. FLAC thus offers the ultimate flexibility for online music distribution.

The online distribution scheme will work like this: after the customer has paid for the desired release via PayPal, it is made accessible to him / her for download in form of the FLAC audio file(s) accompanied by a printable cover in pdf format. The advantages are: fast delivery, no shipping cost, and as far as I know, there are no customs applied to non-material goods, at least not in practice.

I plan to start by offering my own CDs released on trente oiseaux and to then add the releases of trente oiseaux artists who agree that their work be distributed this way. The final step will be releasing new work, by myself or other artists, solely via the internet, thus completing trente oiseaux's transformation into a web label. All CDs released by trente oiseaux to this day will of course remain available as CDs as long as stock lasts.

I plan to begin the project when I'll be back from my concert at the ARTEFACT festival in Belgium, starting with the creation of a MySpace profile for trente oiseaux that will be the home of its new online distribution. If this project proves successful, trente oiseaux can again become the platform for innovative contemporary music of all kinds it used to be in the past - quite a few emerging artists have released their first CD on my label, and I have always seen this as one of its main functions.

Publishing first releases by excellent, but rather unknown artists constitutes a major economic risk for a label ( as i have found out the hard way ) so that getting the production cost for industrially made CDs out of the equation is a huge advantage in making trente oiseaux a platform for exiting new music again. It will also make sharing the revenues from a release with the artist much easier. Without the cost of production, a release can generate revenue from the first sale, and new work can also be released shortly after it has been created when the production process is eliminated.

I will write up a release agreement to define the conditions of a web release on trente oiseaux soon, and invite unsigned artists to get in touch ( mind that I have always been quite picky in choosing works to release - this is the part that won't change... ).

So this is my plan - if you have any comments, experience in the area to share, or advice to give, please write me.

Bernhard

So this means that I won't be able to purchase any of the future TO realeses since I think I won't be able to download a FLAC file on dial-up. I hope that this digital thing won't really be the only future for music distribution. I think it would be interesting to discuss on a proper thread (if it hasn't been made) about the future of music formats, diffusion, quality control and so....

Yeah, I wasn't aware of this at all. I don't even own my own CD player (although frequently use a roommate's boombox while in the shower). I rip at a high bit rate and then play mp3s off my computer through a Rotel amp.
