another vote for 'moonyean.' fantastic. i also like "airs" a lot, which i believe he said somewhere is influenced by bach, and i can hear it. multi-tracked guitar and less bluesy and more overtly "classical"-sounding than a lot of his other records. really though, i kind of like everything (except maybe some of the distortion/wah era experiments, though there's some good ones from that era as well). i really like his duos with alan licht, and the duo cd with grubbs. damon, you might like:

besides this one?

i distinctly remember the first time i ever heard LMC, in my parents' car, on headphones, in what must have been 1994 (according to the internet), when i heard a track from "moonyean" on one of those sampler cd's that used to come with the monthly version of CMJ magazine (a surprisingly great source for finding out about music in my pre-www life). what strikes me now, as it did then, is his very patient use of space and really brilliant placement of the actual notes. at its best, it's somehow deeply affecting without being cloying or contrived.

I was never crazy about moonyean or airs. crucible is another fave of mine, and that one is actually still in print, I think (via FE).

yes, a full-length (40 minutes?) recording made by dean roberts at the hint house sometime around 2000.

What are some of the prime solo outings? What is still in print that is "essential"? I'd like to give a listen since so many folks keep bringing him up to me in conversation.
I'd start with Hell's Kitchen Park (long OOP on CD, just reissued on deluxe double vinyl), 9th Avenue (also long OOP), and the Haunted House disc I put out in 1999 on Erst (still in print). I feel even better about these recs since Suzanne Langille and I had a conversation yesterday, and these are all big faves of hers also, she said 9th Avenue was her alltime fave Loren disc.

(and Tetuzi Akiyama-Relator is essential music, pretty shocked if you actually haven't heard that one.)

9th avenue is maybe my favorite too.

LMC has always been hit or miss for me. I remember picking up Hells Kitchen Park at Amoeba on Telegraph around the time it opened in '92 or '93 and selling it back immediately. The duo with O'Rourke on Hat and the White album on TOTE stand out and are particularly moving.

"In Pittsburgh" (under Loren Mazzacane Connors) is another good one, quite bluesy...

Hi all. thanks for all the recommendations.

the table of the elements ep 'the murder of joan of arc' completely blew my mind with its transcendental cacophony of blinding rainbow coloured noise. i was wondering if anyone knew of any other explorations like this that i should get?

also, on a different tact, does anyone know if that loren connors chan marshall recording ever got officially released?

cheers!

I'd say "The Bridge" or "In Twilight" best represent the dronier and abstract beauty of "The Murder of Joan of Arc". "The Hymn of the North Star" is also relevant to that but less heavy and more subtle. that's probably my favorite from Loren. definitely my favorite guitarist.

has anyone heard of the compilation "till morning: more collected works 1995-2005"? I found it off soulseek but I can't find any information on it. I'm guessing it's a bootleg....

I only have "Airs" (rodecone) and "Hell's Kitchen Park," but I love both. He's one of numerous musicians I'm trying to keep up with - unfortunately, I'm also preoccupied with Pisaro and AMM right now, and both have plenty of records for me to seek out and buy.

yeah, Cream-era Clapton has definitely been an influence on him in Haunted House, probably not as much in other combos/solo.
