both of those guys are personal friends whose music i love, but i had a difficult time with those two cds at first. it took weeks of listening to be able to hear the vocals on the OxIx and the "fight scene" on crumer's. too painful and raw. almost embarrassing. not because they were bad. they seemed honest, but like something i wasn't supposed to be hearing-- like auditory voyeurism, or something. probably having to do with what everyone wrote yesterday in the thread about voice in improv. but i grew to love both of those and, yes, agree that they were two of the best noise cds last year.

Not entirely sure what to make of this one so far

Mr. Prevost has an impeccable track record when it comes to sax/percussion duo recordings (Most Materiall with Evan Parker and So Are We, So Are We with Alan Wilkinson are two of my all-time favourites, with the duo AMM 'to hear and back again' coming in close as well) but with this one.....I'm so far undecided. I really like what Eddie's doing I'm just not so sure about Mr. Wright. I liked "Seymour Wright of Derby" very much but his playing here isn't quite so convincing to me so far, feels a bit unfocused, scattershot. The overwhelming primary impression for me so far has been that he's deliberately and obstinately avoiding playing the saxophone in any recognisable way, and in this single-minded avoidance isn't really turning up anything interesting to replace more conventional vocabulary, rather than hearing the musicality of it and the wonderfully innovative and creative voice I heard in "Seymour Wright of Derby". Maybe it's just me. I don't get a lot of time to listen to music so maybe I just haven't given this one the right kind of attention. I'll be listening to it some more in the coming week I hope so maybe my impression will have changed by then. Still, it poses some interesting questions, it's a thought-provoking disc

ie : ....audible silence - really gorgeous soundscapes ranging from quiet/delicate sounds to fantastic heavy rumbling. i believe richard will have a review soon? really nice stuff here.

this features todd rittman of us maple. the songs are a bit more 'straightforward' than us maple, the tracks w/drumming are typically slow to mid-tempo dirges. the vocals are similar to those on the singer album. there are a lot of electronic and acoustic textural elements. oddly affecting album.
