what makes you say that?surfer wrote:, I do think others might be uncomfortable with the religious iconography.
What makes me say that? I dont know, Christianity tends to bring out strong reactions in people because of its historical record. Feel free to use it if you like it.Charon wrote:what makes you say that?surfer wrote:, I do think others might be uncomfortable with the religious iconography.
true enough, I suppose. I like that one thoughsurfer wrote:What makes me say that? I dont know, Christianity tends to bring out strong reactions in people because of its historical record. You really think its ambiguous? To me (perhaps because I took the picture, but I tend to think not) its clear what it is, what religion its associated with, and to an extent where its from. I dont see anything unclear about it.leroysghost wrote:it's a totally ambiguous image.
I would agree with this to a certain extent. However, religious imagery (and I would classify this as religious, even if its just a donation box) really hasnt ever been used as cover art in eai or jazz for that matter, unless its being used ironically, or being commented on in some way - someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that. And you wouldnt really be using this image ironically in any way. LIke I said, feel free to use it, obviously I like the picture a lot, I just think its an odd choice.i like such images for cover art more often than abstract images. for some reason it seems that it's capacity as cover art frequently dilutes the impact of an abstract image.
OK. let me rephrase. Although I agree it is a great photo, speaking as one who does not believe in the Christ myth, I am not interested in my work being represented by this image. the symbolic crowns worn by Jesus and Mary in the illustration are "commentary" enough.leroysghost wrote:right but there is no commentary on the image.
it could be looking down on the commercialization of religion just as easily as exalting the spread of christianity. there is the fifth/five languages thing, and the offering is supposed to have money going in but instead it's music going out (and musical offering can bring Bach into the picture). it could be a IHM hierarchy joke or it could just be a pretty picture. it's an image very open to interpretation/for the listener to decide.
Interesting, I never really thought of it that way. I took the picture because its compositionally very elegant: the repetition and variation within it, and because of the way it draws your eyes across the top, and then abruptly down to the donation box. If it were a picture of a basin of holy water and a donation box, perhaps at a church that is obviously not a tourist destination, then you might have a better point. But its clear from the photo that the icon pictures (with a history of the church or icon on the back in the different languages) are for free and that the any coins collected goes to the upkeep of the church which functions like a museum, esp in a small town like Siena. I just dont see it in quite as stark a narrative as you do leroy.leroysghost wrote:fair enough, but there are few images that i can think of that better illustrate that jesus is a con for money than that one (if you choose to look at it that way)...
