Andrea Neumann with local improvisors
Free Sheep Foundation
2400 Third ave, Seattle, WA

seattle improvised music presents:

inside pianos duet:
andrea neumann & gust burns
+
improvising quintet
andrea neumann . inside piano
mark collins . bass
mara sedlins . viola
wilson shook . alto saxophone
gust burns . inside piano
Great evening, with Neumann sounding a little more subdued (melancholic?) than I expected. She and Gust were fun to talk to after the gig too. Apparently she'll be off to L.A. for 3 months to take part in a performance that involves music and some sort of pantomime.
Pity there were so few people in the room. Their efforts deserve better publicity.

Music of the New York School 1951–65

This unique event is placed inside the Rothko exhibition, contrasting fully notated and free, open form abstract compositions by two New York masters, both known for their close ties with visual artists and Rothko in particular.

The pieces are performed by some of the notable musicians who contributed to the John Cage Musicircus at Tate 2 years ago, The Kreutzer String Quartet and percussionist Richard Benjafield

Morton Feldman: The King of Denmark (1964)

Earle Brown: String Quartet (1965)

Morton Feldman: Structures for String Quartet (1951)

Earle Brown: pieces from Folio (1952)

Concept developed by Richard Bernas

Tate Modern Level 4
£15 (£12 concessions), booking required

Café Oto, London, November 24th

An evening with Otomo Yoshihide

Otomo Yoshihide
Portable (Rhodri Davies, Ben Drew, Louisa Martin)
+ "very special guests"

---

If all goes to plan for me thats going to be a great week of concert-going...
Malfatti and cranc for 12 hours in Huddersfield followed by the 8 hour drone people gig the next day in London, then the Otomo gig, then a couple of days rest before Rowe at the Tate Modern and then La Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine and Rowe/Bjørgeengen/Wachsmann at the ICA...

Oh and to really top things off, it seems the Feldman/Brown concert within the Tate Rothko exhibition I mentioned two posts up is also on the 24th, ending just before the Otomo show begins... a mad dash across town may be required there...!

hey Alastair how is Sydney?! ;) :D

Friday 28 Nov is likely to be a very similar scenario as Monday 24 Richard mentioned above:

Keith Rowe plays early evening at the Tate, hopefully finishing just on time to allow us to dash up to Cafe Oto (where else ;) ) to catch Axel Dörner + Phil Minton + Thomas Lehn !!! (assuming they will be headlining)

Busy few weeks here!

I shall sadly be away for the aforementioned wonder boys. But:

Sunday 16 | 8.45pm | £10 | Book online
Mopomoso
Guitarist John Russell is the driving force behind Mopomoso, London’s longest running series of concerts dedicated to promoting the best in free improvisation.

For this festival programme there will be a participatory afternoon workshop and an extended evening concert featuring some of the finest improvisers to be heard anywhere including...

Swift are The Winds of Life (Beatrix Ward Fernandez, Yvonna Magda, Charlie Collins)
The Alan Tomlinson trio (with Dave Tucker and Roger Turner)
Steve Beresford / Satoko Fukuda duo
Furt (Richard Barrett and Paul Obermayer)
John Butcher / Gino Robair duo
The Evan Parker acoustic trio (with John Russell and John Edwards).

Very much looking forward to that duo, and:

TUJIKO NORIKO + LAWRENCE ENGLISH + JOHN CHANTLER (TRIO) LAWRENCE ENGLISH (SOLO)
WED 26 NOV '08 • 8PM • £7

That one very very much so indeed yes oh me oh my

Cartwright xx

I saw this a few years ago in St. Louis, going in I was dubious of Butcher's electronic approach (this was billed and I had maybe ten discs of his work but all acoustic) and holy shit did it kick ass. Way too much Robair putting the metal crochet stick upright on the snare but a great evening of interplay.

yoshimura told us this was inspired by AMPLIFY, FWIW, which is pretty easy to see.

Mark Wastell started a promotional thread for it in IHP Stephen. I won't be there for that one either as I'll be over in Ireland to see the Krebs/Lacey/Vogel trio.

Say hi if we're both at the same gig in November though?
