While I felt that Basinski's Disintegration Loops were melancholic, I feel that Basinski's Watermusic is more uplifting. Both are wonderful.

Some interesting choices in this thread.

For me, these are probably the standbys for wallowing/staring at the wall:

Neil Young - On the Beach
Songs: Ohia - Didn't It Rain
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Son Volt - Trace

It seems cheesy, but sometimes the really dramatic, "cinematic" instrumental post-rock stuff like Explosions in the Sky or Surface of Ecyon is really good for this.
