as far as Ambush-ish ultra distorted crazy ragga, Istari Lasterfahrer has been quietly been putting out shitloads of unbelievable stuff
he calls his music "dubcore" and its definitely some of the best stuff out there, of its kind
also highly recommended, ZOMBIEFLESHEATER (one time i saw CX Kidtronik and he played a ZFE track on 45 instead of 33 and i almost had a heart attack), Amboss, FFF, Bong-Ra, etc
altho i guess Bong-Ra and FFF might be a bit polished compared to the early Ambush stuff
but the others i mentioned, totally fucked up, you need to hear it

Photek's early stuff was so rad.... everything up to the tracks on Form + Function was so great.... but i always thought Modus Operandi was boring as shit. i somehow liked his house album at the time but i sold it. have no clue if he's doing anything good now. but supposedly theres a Form + Function 2 coming out? hmmmm

Now I eventually have a recording made in my rehearsal room - sometimes it's a little shaky, but it helps to demonstrate what kind of sound I was looking for.

The doodling on the track is some older sound file I added to the bass-sequence (both played back from CD while recording the drums), so there's drum'n'bass plus something - but not much consideration went into the inclusion of that element.

looks like its out. was not expecting that at all. he's been over in LA for a while now doing film scoring and producing hiphop. his older work along with other peeps like source direct and paradox were the pinnacle of dnb for me. shame it came to such a dead end.

the stuff i'm going to recommend is definitely more in the drum n' bass world vs. breakcore..it's not idm-ish and it does get played on the dancefloor, even within that..my picks for some sick ish:

Yup, that's the Dresden Dolls* randomly combined with something (obviously not jungle/d'n'b-related) I recorded some years ago - that track is just left from another everybody listen to this-occasion.

Wow.. I can't believe I just scanned four pages to see if anyone had recommended Amon Tobin...! As it stands, his bricolage popped up a page or two back, but i rate the slightly later Permutations double. I have no idea what he's doing now-ish, but what I liked about it at the time was he was constructing very organic sounding breakbeat out of classic samples (Louie Bellson and that era, etc) so it had a certain crunch that the electronic d+b couldn't get to. Been a while, but something i do come back to every so often, and would probably be in my desert-island pile..

Remarc - Sound Murderer and Bizee Bee - Retrospective are also a couple really good albums. Remarc is a lot of people's favorite of all time.

Me too, I love the ragga jungle sound. I know this stuff mostly through friends in town and DJ nights, but I've been listening to a fair bit of ragga jungle while at work and on transit recently, (obviously best through a soundsystem). This guy Sixteenarmedjack from Toronto has some great tracks up on his soundcloud page, especially this tune here: -- I caught a set from him on New Years eve, playing mostly dubplates and exclusive mixes and it was madness, tons of fun.

edit: fair warning, this stuff is not jazzy and is rather dirty/aggresive

i think some of the confusion in this thread is the very big difference between what the op meant by "free jazz energy" and what the thought of jazzy d&b means to most people (car commercials)

but that myspace sample earlier really does sound a lot like MoHa!

i mean really it just sounds like you should listen to the Roni Size/Reprazent albums... planet V related mixes might do something for you, but then those are more traditionally built 12"s generally... geared for the dance.

can't really think of a nice jazzy dominated mixset, but i'm sure if you trawl a few tracklists on discogs, you will turn up something.
