The cover art is so great.

Can't go wrong with any Hammill from the seventies. I have a soft spot for Chameleon, In Camera and The Silent Corner albums, but up to Sitting Targets they're all solid gold to me.

Been listening to the new Jurg Frey and Radu Malfatti 2CD album. Really enjoying it a whole helluva lot! Played it 3 times last night.

Also listening to, while waiting for pizza to arrive, lightning hopkins on spotify.

same. it's really beautiful! i love the ambiguity of the electronic/field recording textures in jurg's piece. so delicate and rich

Drumm/Lescalleet - The Abyss

Pretty darned good actually. Had a chance today to sit around and listen to this one. One of my favorite releases of this year.

I think with both releases the 2nd discs are particularly strong. Especially the frey/malfatti, it's starting to rank high up there with some of my favorite ersts.

I should give the first discs more time, but that's hard with not enough time on my hands, so I keep reaching for the 2nds.

On an appreciation phase for the work of Earle Brown. Much enjoyment to be had, no duds yet and quite a few fantastic records. The one in the picture is fantastic, the version of December 1952 by Tudor being the best I´ve heard so far.

I contacted the Earle Brown foundation a few years ago, and they offer CDs with archival recordings - some really "historic" lo-fi tracks in there, but that includes rare works for orchestra and ensemble nowhere else to find. If you get past the sound quality, those CDs (I think I have two) are a treasure trove!

My favorite Brown works probably are the ones where he's the closest to european 50s avantgarde - I'm talking about a few earlier serial compositions. I guess that's not his most characteristic work, but well... that's how it is.

Yes, the record I´m talking about also has Octet, which I´ve read about for years but never actually encountered before. I can easily forget muddy sound when dealing with this kind of stuff. Synergy, the out of print Hat Art is also very good.

Those early serial works were immediately taken with gusto by Boulez, not so much Feldman´s graphic scores or Wolff´s early works, minimal and astringent as they are. He actually managed to be on equal standing on both sides of the Atlantic, no small feat in those years of extreme partisanship and sharply contrasted attitudes toward music and aesthetics.

It's not listed on discogs.com, but this one is still pretty good anyway. Kate Stenberg on violin and Eva Maria Zimmermann playing the piano of works by Henry Cowell, Henning Christiansen and others.

I added this to a discogs order of things I already knew I'd like, purely because this was fairly cheap and I was fairly curious. Turns out it's by a fair margin my favourite thing in the package, and may well become my favourite Olivia Block record.

Just curious here if anyone knew if Will Guthrie or Jerome Noetinger has released anything recently?

Tenkaku + Appel (Radu Malfatti, Taku Sugimoto)

Not really a release in itself, Tenkaku being from the Improvised Music From Japan 2002-2003 CD compilation and Appel from the double CD Futatsu, but they pair beautifully.

Xavier Charles / Jean Pallandre / Marc Pichelin - Atlanta (Ouïe-Dire, 2003)
Postcard sounds from Atlanta (of all places!).

Ouïe-Dire full length releases focused mainly on field recordings used as an extra instrument alongside musicians improvising on conventional instruments.

Atlanta, on the other hand is more of a set of audible photo-snaps taken (recorded) at various parts of the town. Indoors, outdoors, at the barber's.... Could be any town, though a few radio/tv broadcasts here and there give some hints of the place. Xavier Charles occasionally intercepts with the clarinet.

A great album done with a lot of thought, great taste and no doubt taken out of hours of recordings. Reminiscent of Ferrari's 'Far West News'.
