Damo Suzuki. He's in just three official albums, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days. Most people consider these three to be their best albums so Damo is the singer mostly associated with the name Can, but Malcolm Mooney set the blueprint for singing in a band of these characteristics on Monster Movie, their first record. Damo Suzuki brings a lightness and agility that his predecesor didn't have, as Mooney infused his delivery with good doses of paranoia for an often unsettling listening experience.

Should add 'Unlimited Edition' & 'Soundtracks' to these 3 at the top there.

A good release, very close to IST’s beautiful studio recording ‘Lodi’ also published by Confront a while back.

great to see Confront back in action. a very high rate of excellent discs during their first incarnation. including those by the Sealed Knot, Graham Halliwell, Rhodri Davis, the owner himself Mr Wastell and a lot more. Their back catalog is worth digging for all newcomers.

Some while ago, I made a compilation of Carla Bley songs, all taken from unofficial FM-recordings from 1979-83. They are mostly quite deranged and funny, pretty different from her more straight ahead instrumental stuff from that period. None of the people singing here are actual singers, and especially Carla's fragile voice can be quite moving in the more dramatic song sections. There have been a few attempts circa '80/'82 to officially document that aspect of her output, but none of those have the charm of the recordings I compiled here

Funny, I was playing Fictitious Sports today, the solo album by Nick Mason with songs written for Carla and sung by Robert Wyatt. The last song in it, I'm a Mineralist, is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Yes... that album is one of the "attempts" I meant above. The "I'm a Mineralist"-version I have might be the live-premiere of that song. They pretty much fuck it up on stage but still have a lot of fun with the whole situation.

Hey, I would love to hear that! Carla's daughter, Karen Mantler, is also a fine songwriter on her own, quirky as her mom, if a tad more understated, and a fine singer with great pitch control and zero vibrato, plus she plays a mean mouth harp.
