Tenniscoats - Live Wonderus
Excellent release by Tenniscoats. Live, but am wondering if there are studio versions of these songs too. This one sounds different from their more polished sound that they have on their more recent releases, but that is I like this one so much.

That's a goody. Watch out for an Archie Shepp Invisible Jukebox coming up in The Wire.. Have been revisiting all my Shepps to celebrate. Especially enjoyed (this time round) Black Gypsy and Coral Rock

What's Invisible Jukebox? I've never bought The Wire. However in Berlin I've bought this one also:
Archie Shepp-live at the panafrican festival

How is it? Never heard anything of Shepp before, right or wrong I've always thought he's too much involved in social and political isuees for my taste.

It's like the old Downbeat Blindfold Test - you play a musician a dozen or so pieces, most of which s/he will/should be able to identify, as a springboard into a discussion of his/her work.rolandtravy wrote:What's Invisible Jukebox?
Neither have I, since I started writing for themrolandtravy wrote:I've never bought The Wire.
You mean you bought it and haven't played it yet? Whack it on, nice and loud.rolandtravy wrote:However in Berlin I've bought this one also:

I wouldn't let that spoil your enjoyment of the music.rolandtravy wrote:Never heard anything of Shepp before, right or wrong I've always thought he's too much involved in social and political isuees for my taste.

Re: Now Playing
Well I've listened to it all the day long, but sill don't get it. It's a hard one, the hardest AACM stuff I've ever listened to. The duo between Lewis and the other guy(don't remember the name) is the one that sounds more familiar to me, definitely more easier to follow than the other tracks. The first track( seems a mix between Boulez puntillistic stuff and New Orleans jazz) it's really an enigma(or simply a terrible piece of music? who knows). However It's interesting hearing Leroy Jenkins violin playing, is a guy I've always been curious about but never listened to him before.

Re: Now Playing
Hey Mono are you referring to Bill Laswell or to Captain B.? For the latter Trout mask replica is a must have, listen to Moonlight on Vermont or Frownland on the tube, Beefheart is a great one.
Re: Now Playing
was referring to laswell. "frownland" may be my favorite beefheart track, though i haven't explored the other albums. got trout mask when i was young, and then a friend played me Skin Graft artists like colossamite and you fantastic! I latched on to us maple pretty hard also, and that pushed any interest in Beefheart to the side. though people might argue they're incomparable, us maple took elements of (trout mask) beefheart that i really liked.

I don't know Laswell music so much, but maybe something by material could be a good start. Sounded strange an IHM user had never heard anything from CB!
colossamite? us maple?tell me more about ! Never heard their names before.

Re: Now Playing
Well, returning to Television, I'm getting interested in Tom Verlaine solo career. What's his best album after Television broke up? Anybody?
Re: Now Playing
us maple put out 4-5 albums in the 90s, their last record purple on time. came out in 2003. a four piece, primarily guitars, drums, and vocals. talker is a high point, songs are skeletal and rickety. vocals strained, wheezing, the playing is fragmented, falling apart and then rebuilding.. they wring a lot of novel sounds out of the guitar, the drumming is fluid and creative. colossamite is similarly unorthodox, but more driving and 'rock' ish, though still having chaotic or free-form sounding parts in a song.rolandtravy wrote:I don't know Laswell music so much, but maybe something by material could be a good start. Monty Adkins/Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay: Five Panels.
I'm going on something of an electroacoustic binge/catch up this week. This is much 'nicer'/more tasteful than I was expecting it to be (from the little I know of PAT's solo work).

Re: Now Playing
Bill Laswell - "City of Light" is pretty cool, and worth checking out imo. It's very trancey and meditative. Haven't really heard much else by him tho.

I like this Tom Verlaine song called "Shimmer", I used to have the 7" but that was long ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lai7BpTYD4k
