Holy shitballs, 340 bucks? What portion of NYAQ's audience is this being made for? Yeesh. And I though black metal was fetishistic. I'm surprised there aren't plaster casts of Milford Graves' teeth included in this, or maybe some locks of Rudd's hair. Ugh. Anywho, I'm listening to something slightly less KVLT: Mare "Spheres Like Death"

Re: Now Playing
If I recall correctly, when Ben Young emailed round a couple of years ago to announce the project, we were invited to pre-order and commit to the tune of $1500 or something like that. If it had been 340 I would have probably chipped in myself. Even so, when you do the math, even if they give 65 copies away and sell the rest at the asking price, that's $200,000. Which ain't shabby. I heard Milford doesn't come cheap. The first Triple Point record, the Taylor / Oxley double LP, was also pricey ($110).Tanner wrote:Holy shitballs, 340 bucks?
Collectors, my friend. My dear departed buddy Didier Kowalski was salivating about this for months. And would have thought nothing of paying the price. Completism is a serious addiction. Didier was the kind of guy who'd buy reissues of the same album - he had three different copies of The Black Ark!Tanner wrote:What portion of NYAQ's audience is this being made for?
Well, there are folks who post here who think nothing of jetting across continents to catch the latest Erstwhile festival, n'est-ce pas?Tanner wrote: And I though black metal was fetishistic.

It is impressive how fresh and in control the first 2 NYAQ discs sound today.Dan Warburton wrote: New York Art Quartet, Call It Art (Triple Point Records)
At least compared to the free jazz of the time.
Probably the same with this release.
...but the poem "Black Dada Nihilismus" by Amiri Baraka, included on their first record.
Man, this is so brutal and hard to take.

Re: Now Playing
There isn't much Baraka in this set (thankfully, imo). I'm amazed, though, that the rest of the stuff has taken so long to surface (I suspect, again, that Graves was holding out.. when will we see decent reissues of his IPS stuff?), especially since the market has been flooded in recent years with plenty of (good but not exceptional) Sun Ra.

Re: Now Playing
Beautiful set indeed. Dan, did they send this gorgeous wooden box
with the interlocking sliver of wood that holds it all in place, etc.
or do they have a simpler set for review purposes?

Re: Now Playing
No, I got the bloody great big box, which must weigh about 4kg (note that the price doesn't include shipping
). And knowing Ben Young's concern for detail, I very much doubt that this will surface later in some cheapo reissue. Of course, some hip dude will rip it from vinyl and post it somewhere as a download, just a question of time I suppose
