Love the packaging too, think that the "previously labelled discs" joke is quite fun :)

on the tape i got..
first side is long stretches of total silence (no.. not total silence.. filled with tape hiss) broken by short interjections of prepared guitar. close to 30 min long. in a malfatti vein.
second side is active prepared guitar which reaches a squall eventually with electronics (?.. well, definitely delay effect) coming into play more and more.

excellent and absurd.

holy crap. the increasingly hip foundation for contemporary arts just granted KD $25k in unrestricted funding. other winners were marina rosenfeld, steve roden, and michael webster. don't know the last one, and the previous two get more than enough institutional/foundation love for my taste, but it's pretty heartening to see them give it to someone who doesn't seem to play that game much at all. (last year mick barr won, and they've given it to plenty of great people in the past).

Good stuff. The set with Capece and Malfatti on Wednesday was excellent.

In response to a PM from Jon, who reviewed this concert already :)
jon abbey wrote:I can give you a report on it without having been there or having heard from anyone who was (think of it as a Mattinesque take on concertgoing)
A great idea, this. I think I could have done the same thing with that Léandre / Ayler bash I just savaged in The Wire and PT.
jon abbey wrote:"Last night's trio show at Les Instants Chavires was much anticipated by all.
So why barely three dozen people showed is a mystery to me. Must have been a football match on telly.
jon abbey wrote:Kevin Drumm rarely ventures to this part of the world (or anywhere outside of Chicago, really), and how he would reconcile his normal approach with that of Capece and Malfatti was something everyone was waiting to hear.
Well, it turned out that Malfatti's aesthetic dominated the proceedings
No surprises there. But I sometimes wish he'd blow wild and dirty FMP style just for a few seconds, and give KD something to bite back at (of course, a few flicks of the finger on the keypad and the Mac would obliterate everything in its path, but it'd be a nice way to go)
jon abbey wrote:along with a typically noisy crowd at Instant Chavires.
 Not as bad as usual, actually. The punters were attentive and respectful throughout.
jon abbey wrote:Drumm and Capece basically acted as colorists
Not really - Drumm was the continuous element - paper thin drones and various little computer rustles - against which the two horns worked. And against each other. I mean, it wasn't exactly Stan Getz and JJ Johnson trading fours, but they were certainly working with each other's ideas. It wasn't chacun pour soi.
jon abbey wrote:in one long set of improv containing both stretches of silence and quiet activity.
50 minutes. Very little silence indeed, actually.
jon abbey wrote:as always with Radu's work, the focus on each sound becomes crucial
..as if it isn't with anyone else's haha
jon abbey wrote:and Drumm was up to the challenge as a longtime fan of Radu's aesthetic, with he and Lucio both adding their own tiny sounds as the set developed. Capece's sounds acted more in a directly supporting role to Radu's, whereas Kevin's were more in contrast
No, I didn't find that. It was the first time I'd seen LC live, and to be honest I rather prefer listening to what he does: seeing him stick cardboard tubes in the bell of his bass clarinet and then balance sheets of plastic and all kinds of stuff on top was rather distracting - but the end result sounded great.
jon abbey wrote:but all three combined for a very enjoyable if not groundbreaking night of music.
Word. But isn't that always the case? I feel there's very little ground to break any more in live performance of this kind of music - and, unlike Mattin and his crew (I imagine), I don't have a problem with that.
jon abbey wrote:now if only the audience would learn to shut the hell up and listen!"
As I say, they did. Don't know if it would have been worth you crossing the Atlantic to see, Mark (the Rowe Tilbury gig before Xmas was though), but a very pleasant and satisfying evening of fine, carefully wrought music by three fine performers.

I saw the trio last night in Lille (la Malterie), it was my first live experience with that kind of aesthetic, didn't know what to expect and it for sure was sublime.
The audience was mainly absorbed by the sound/silence and tried to be as silent as possible (I was myself afraid to be too noisy drinking my beer), some drunk guy shouted something stupid and left, and the flush of toilets from the back room made most of us quietly laugh...

I 'm gonna remember that night for a long time!

Something like 40, including the staff. The audience was older than the usual folks in this place.

After the show my ears were buzzing just like after a noisy gig, kinda strange sensation...
