Sonny Simmons Staying on the watch.

It's amazing to me that Barbara Donald is rarely mentioned when "New Thing" trumpeters are discussed...She's great.

sorry...if i told you, more people might obtain it, and then the recording would be less rare and therefore not as fulfilling for me to listen to.

no but seriously, i got it from one of the more esoteric members-only file sites. i wouldnt mind uploading it for a while (as it was a japan only release, and now out of print for almost 20 years) if interested.

This was supposed to be ready close to two months ago, but there were some "issues".....I'm still waiting for the mail to come through.
I grew up with "Motorcade Sped On" and "Everything's Disappeared"...so I have high expectations for the collection.
didn't finish until today, hence the slow answer. dunno, I don't think my taste overlaps with yours much, but for me, nothing else he's done is anywhere near as zeitgeist-capturing as the original three Lessons, which I still play all the time, especially the first one. most of the rest of the set is OK, but nothing too special IMO.

on a related note, I always feel like there's a lot of potential in this area (plunderphonics, mashups, whatever you want to call it), and I check out quite a lot of it from numerous different mini-scenes and perspectives, but I'm virtually always disappointed.

I haven't heard Untilted in a while but from memory it's fairly different. Quaristice focuses on short tracks.

Jon - if you're disappointed with the current mash-up scene, then dig back in time and check out The Tape Beatles.....Out of sync Death of Vinyl issued some of their stuff during the late 80s. If that doesn't do it, try Sucking Chest Wound or things along that line...

I didn't mention the Lessons as those tracks were too obvious....I assume you're talking about the versions from No Rights Given or Implied?

That was one pleasant surprise for me when I delved into the ESP-catalogue.

np here:

concert premiere (as I understand) by Public Image Limited (20-Dec 1978, Br?ssel)

At this very moment they seem to "cover" a Sex Pistols-tune, which I find rather underwelming so far.
