Wade Matthews (electronics) & Ingar Zach (percussion) - Morke-Lys (2005)

Definitely a mixed bag for me--half of it I really dislike (often with Zach doing the bowed cymbals thing or settling into some repetitive gesture), the other I think is brilliant. The title tune and "Schw?rze Licht" are the winners here; both choppy, exhiliarting, along the lines of Thomas Lehn's best synth work.

to check out Fuck Buttons on myspace, over the last six months I have had so many people tell me to check them out that I finally buckled, and as I suspected I am not completely bowled over, but yeah I guess they're the best UK post-rock band I've heard in a while.

Billy Bao ("Billy Bao," vocals; Mattin, guitar; Xabier Erkizia, guitar; Alberto Lopez, drums) - Dialectics of Shit [Parts Unknown, 2008]

Sludgy and lo-fi hardcore punk buried in layers of noise and grit. First tune isn't unlike any number of early 80s bands--skippable. But bass-heavy riffs are kept to an absolutely mininum, and the drumming consisntely hammers out the beat with nothing even resembling a drum-fill--becomes oddly effective after a while. The punk vibe is occasionally gradually drowned in noise, or is looped like a broken record, or panned suddenly, or treated in various other non-punky ways. Admirably heavy here and there, the dislocation effects work well enough, and there's a great blast of roaring noise in one of the later untitled pieces with the simple drums slowly emerging out of it. Fun listen.
