Nice, thanks. I'll check them out when I get the chance. I don't know if I mentioned Pharoah, but they're another good one in that group, although not as good as any above.

I haven't really been listening to much other than Samothrace's newish one on 20 Buck Spin. I've been sitting on my copy of Deathspell Omega's new one, waiting for a good time to immerse myself. From what I've heard the new stuff from Unholy Crucifix is pretty good traditional, buzzy black metal goop -- great cover, as well. I picked up Rites of thy Degringolade's "Totality" record and have been really enjoying it -- manic, near j. read-like drumming, intricate song structures, nearly intelligible vokills. If Revenge is a little too chaotic for some people's tastes, than Rites is a great inbetween unhinged black-death band. Their album, "An Ode to Sin," is also really excellent.

Another group with Chris Black, right? I don't know how he juggles that many projects, but Superchrist's Holy Shit is some pretty fine Motörhead-worship -- I also forget if this has been mentioned here.

Nothing new to report on my end of aural decimation. I've been listening to a lot of Autopsy-- that's always good, but never really exciting to comment on. I haven't been buying records the last few months and feel blissfully alive, although I have many moments where I go through the whole thing of e-commerce just to cancel at the last moment when I ask myself, "do I really fucking need this?" We all know that answer. Anywho, I probably will check out the new Aluk Todolo, although is that metal? Does it matter? fuck it. One new discovery has been the the Beyond Hell on Dark Descent; I could've sworn it was 20 years old but apparently it's rather newish (2010). Unnnn, I'm fatigued by so many records. Back to Twisted Tower Dire. Mongrel's Cross is good, I forgot that.

Yeah, do so, it's excellent. The new Blut Aus Nord is also good (it's still growing on me, so it might be excellent - it probably is), but that's about it too, over here. A slow period for metal it seems. The 2 splits of Antediluvian (with Adversarial & one with Temple Nightside) spring to mind. Also bought Rites of Thy Degringolade, didn't check that out beforehand, good stuff indeed.

Since I've been on a Aluk Todolo & Deathspell Omega spree lately, I've bought Diamatregon - Crossroad, & Hirilorn - Legends Of Evil And Eternal Death, but I haven't received those yet. Curious to get them.

That Bell Witch on Profound Lore seems to be another winner for the label, just heard 2 or 3 tracks online.

I was going to say a few pages (months?) back about someone mentioning deafheaven, just thought of it now I've got some time to do forums again.

This is not about the new black metal discussions or anything; I found it really weird how much I hated those people and still listened to their catchy music all the time. Probably because I nostalgically like shoegaze melodies and can't get enough blastbeats. Screamo vocals are alright, I suppose. Could do without that guy.

Are there anyone who actually mixes these two things in a way that does not make me groan at myself for listening to it?

Can we put blastbeats on all my favourite slowdive songs?
Maybe someone here knows Simon Scott, perhaps he has all the original mixes and then we're in business. Or, get Simon to give the mixes to Lev Weinstein, that will be deliciously confusing. Maybe even get them both to write a manifesto about it.

You should probably hate yourself if you're listening to any of this stuff. More seriously, I have no idea who actually mixes that stuff without coming off as trend hopping. I really like Velvet Cacoon, even if apparently everyone hates them for being... well, I don't know what they are -- probably dudes who wear billowing shirts, smoke opium, and won't shut up about Les Fleurs Du Mal. Anyway, I'm not sure if that's really all that slow dive-y or not. I just put Genevieve on again, and I still really like it. Not too many blast beats though, unless they're decadent blast beats.

I got about as far as the part where he nonchalantly explains how a bandmember died.
Definitely hating myself for listening to this now, but they do use some fun recording techniques. A bit annoying when random bits of ambience suddenly pops in for no reason.

Apparently, to pervert black metal you need to be extremely arrogant. I'm glad people do it, though. Can't wait until black metal has taken over all the worst sub-genres.

Just rediscovered Mütiilation. Previously I'd mainly been listening to Vampires of Black Imperial Blood and Masjestas Leprosus (good albums also), but Black Millenium is really good! Especially the part from 1:12 onward...

that is a tough question since a good portion of black metal releases are demos... moonblood has the best ratio of winners imo.

2012 has been a rough year for bm... sorting through the insane amount of usa/depressive/blackgaze/post bm releases, that i can not stand, but i have found a few things that i like.

Thanks for these recommendations. Most are a bit generic, but there are a few that could be gems in the mix. It's a tough one finding the good among the tons of constant new releases. Back in the days, you had some sort of overview of what was going on, now it's all over the place, and retro-worship, bands mimicking the aethetics of older acts just because it hasn't been mimicked before. Far between originality or clear visions nowadays.

For those of you enjoying the new Aluk Todolo, check out the Crossroad album by Diamatregon. It's one of the former bands of AT members. Much more black metal, but it some of AT's sound nonetheless. Definitely not a generic black metal album, but something strange in it's own right.

The album was released on Tumult in 2008.


Also, I've been on a heavy Master's Hammer trip lately. Just Ritual & The J Occultist though, their newer stuff should arrive here soon.

I had to say, I finally got my package of tapes (ordered in early August) from Crepusculo Negro yesterday. Didn't think they'd come through. Still waiting on Rhinocervs though...

I've given up on ever getting my Rhinocervs after 3 unreturned emails to them. Dickheads.

Serpentine Path's newish album on Relapse is pretty good -- deathy doom stuff written mostly by Tim Bagshaw from Electric Wizard, but made up of all the members of Unearthly Trance-- but ultimately not really like either of those bands. It's simple, gritty, and somewhat claustrophobic. It also definitely benefits from high volume.

The new Hooded Menace is great, as well.

Oh, the new Kelt Rote, Trespass, is solid.

Thanks to checking out the things mentioned in the Lurker year-end-post I realized that Angantyr & Wolfhetan is excellent (atmospheric) black metal, both of their latest albums are worth checking out. Lurker's Instinct's The Black Wound recommendation is also seconded.
