Swoon - Paddy McAloon
The mention of Steely Dan yesterday brought back the memory of Prefab Sprout, and of Swoon, probably their best album (after all these years - it's not at all my generation though). Am I the only on this board to love Paddy McAloon's songs? This is what I read in a interview of him recently:
What a nice chap old Karlheinz was...I wrote to Stockhausen when I was 17, and he sent me an autographed score which I still treasure.
One last thing, as to the contemporary relevance of this entry: Momus ends his last album, Bibliotek, with some sort of cover of "Green Isaac" which one can found on the aforementioned album.

One of my favorite bands, but Swoon is my least favorite album of theirs. From Langley Park to Memphis is my favorite, although I know that's not a common opinion.Lao Tsu Ben wrote:

this version of crippled symmetry has been getting some play. wondering how ...at june in buffalo compares. anybody care to make a comparison?
edit: don't know when this was performed, i have a six-part series of mp3s titled "region 1, 2, 3, etc." and "1983," but no more information..

Yes, it's an unusual opinion, but though I like From Langley Park To Memphis, I was infatuated long ago with Swoon's intricacies, and still am. It also helps that the record was not marred by Thomas Dolby's production. At any rate that's what I used to think , I've mellowed, and I now think that when Thomas Dolby's production works, it adds to the heartbreaking quality of the songs, to that sense of remoteness so characteristic, at least for me, of the 80's.dialectics of shit wrote:One of my favorite bands, but Swoon is my least favorite album of theirs.
