He is the standard by which all other versions are measured. Shakin' Stevens' version is very close though. I do not like the Honeydrippers or Tom Waits or Cat Power versions. Horace Andy, John Fahey, and Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole have all done versions as well.

Not likely to appeal to the fearless partisans of unceasing innovation and cutting-edgeness on this board, but I always kinda liked Tocotronic. I always regarded it as a sort of synthesis of Nirvana/Seattle Grunge as well as then-current "Brit Pop".

What's sociologically interesting, too, about all the "Hamburg scene" bands, (Tocotronic, Blumfeld, Stella, etc.) is that in the mid-1990s, some of the more self-styled arbiters of taste had regarded it as a sort of legitimately German type of pop music, the bands wrote lyrics in German, etc. Yet in terms of influence, those bands never spread beyond a certain kind of university-educated, nominally left-wing, "alternative" youth demographic, and it never took hold at the center of the culture industry.

Then the shit hit the fan in the late-90s/early-noughties, and the German-language bands that took off in the mainstream were gawdawful shit like Rammstein (probably needs no introduction here), Wir sind Helden (awful retrograde pseudo new-wave for young careerists) and MIA (nationalist pseudo-hip tenth-generation electro-clash rip-off, not be confused with the British/Tamil artist who uses the same letters, but with punctuation).

In terms of pop music, despite the fact that it's the much cooler city, Berlin only produces absolute shit.
