Re: Guitar solos
Roger McGuinn with The Byrds. Of course Eight Miles High, but more specifically for me his Bach quotation on She Don't Care About Time. Great stuff!
Re: Guitar solos
Thinking about guitar playing musicians more, I came up with Elliott Sharp, and the first solo of his coming to mind is the one in "Gonkulator". There he uses two sounds doing some call-and-response stuff, and I particularly love the sound of the thinnner sounding 2-voiced part.
Adrian Belew did some solos I love as well. Very much effectpedal-based - and impressive at that - must be the one in "Three of a perfect pair".
I also love his very noisy solo-contribution to "The Howler".
There are a few examples in concert recordings from the 1977/78-Frank Zappa tour, where he already shows a strong and distinctive voice as guitar-soloist.

but i'll go ahead and also nominate the solos on the first two Blue Cheer LPs- some crazed sounds on there.
and also the two solos on Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song"

Re: Guitar solos
Providing examples of particular solos is more the idea.
Re: Guitar solos
mick barr is CONSTANTLY soloing. listen to anything he has recorded, ever.
Re: Guitar solos
I have a hard time doing that - I don't listen to music in little separate chunks. I play an album as a whole, I notice that there were guitar parts I like...I don't pay attention to song titles or what song the solo was part of (after close to 30 years of listening to Entertainment, I actually had to scan through it to find out which songs the two I mentioned earlier were - I could tell you where they were on the record, but not what the title was...not my way of listening).fearandpanic wrote:Providing examples of particular solos is more the idea.
So, in keeping with that, I will put in another rec for Boon's solos all over Double Nickels...

Re: Guitar solos
That's fine, I was only talking to Gordon and perhaps the previous poster. You referred to an album at least. What will make the topic degenerate is people just listing guitarists. There's another thread for that.Dan G wrote:I have a hard time doing that - I don't listen to music in little separate chunks. Re: Guitar solos
i haven't heard everything mick barr has every recorded, but to my mind he is the epitome of what sucks about guitar solos.
so if you can't recommend something, i'll step in and recommend nothing.

Re: Guitar solos
I was actually going to mention Vincebus Eruptum but couldn't choose any specific solo over the others, so I didn't list Blue Cheer. But yeah, seconded.carlos wrote:but i'll go ahead and also nominate the solos on the first two Blue Cheer LPs- some crazed sounds on there.
