Agreed.

I'll second that.....make that fourth or fifth!

I didn't listen to a lot of recorded music this year, but here are some great moments:

1. Michael Pisaro's nachtstimmung (2008) performed by Object Collection as part of the Experimental Music series at the Ontological Theater in New York.

2. Seeing the Lawrence Weiner retrospective, AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE, on both coasts at the Whitney Museum (NYC) and MOCA (LA).

3. Sam Sfirri performing Radu Malfatti's nonostante II (2000) for solo piano in Charleston, South Carolina as part of Silent Music: 4'33'' and Beyond.

4. Performing Taku Sugimoto's two timbers (2008) at Listen/Space in New York.

5. Reading about Keith Rowe's solo performance at Amplify 2008: light.

6. Masafumi Ezaki, Othello/3 Minutes (Slub Music)

yeah, me too, strange, in a way, but reading about music has a "similar" impact as the thing itself. but that probably needs a thread to itself?

i felt similarly about reading those reviews. i felt each reviewer in their own way was able to transport some of what happened back to us here. thanks again chaps.

I find that there's a hint of insiderism (if that's a word) in that practice, as if the message is only meant for those who are 'in the know'. Or maybe it's just for dramatic impact. In any case I can't figure out any non-dubious reason to do it, surely it cannot be easier than just typing the name...

An image is more dynamic than text. It is larger. More colorful. It generally draws more attention. One posts an image to a message board in order to give his or her post more weight when someone is rapidly scanning down the page.

That and this application of oblique imagery without clarifying text has been considered cool practice since the dawn of time. Not just here. Not even just on the internet.
The grammatical rules associated with diagrammatic reduction become apparent by considering a more tractable diagrammatic representation, applied to the Windsor knot in Fig. 8. - Fink & Mao, Tie knots, random walks and topology, (Physica A 276)

actually i misread the complaint entirely, thought you were referring to the habit of posting album covers without text to identify them.

i don't know how much i've seen the use of referential pictures in place of album covers, but it seems to me it's just a measure of wit that may or may not fly.

sorry about the misunderstanding though.

in grisha's defense: based on how many people listed the breadwinner in this thread as their favorite album of the year, i don't think he was trying to be l33t by posting the inside cover image from it. and if someone asked nicely what that was a picture of, i doubt anybody on this board would have said "ugh, you don't know?"

and just to help get this thread on track and not be a part of the problem: i don't have a list finalized yet, but these will be on it: breadwinner, imperial distortion, starshipz and rocketz, the soundtrack from the movie "inside."

i usually do just right click on an image and then sometimes there's a clue about the image or not. i mean i'm going to the address in img src.

I was just listening again to one of the few new records I acquired this year, the debut album by the American sister duo Festival. It's somewhat in the same pseudo-folk vein as Espers and Feathers, but more stripped down and very short, with hints of old time hymnody. Highly recommended to fans of the style; others might well find it 'awful'.

alan courtis - Unstringed guitar & cymbals (blossoming noise)
which i thought just wasn't that exciting, certainly not a patch on Otomo's similar offering from last year: modulation with 2 electric guitars and 2 amplifiers.
After reconsidering, I'd probably chose this one:

First four titles that spring to mind in no particular order

Lionel Marchetti, Seijiro Murayama - Hatali Atsalei (L’échange des yeux)

Graham Lambkin / Jason Lescalleet - The Breadwinner

Frédéric Blondy and Thomas Lehn - Obdo

Kevin Drumm - Imperial Distortion

Robert (hatta) has started what looks like it will be a very interesting 12 entry project on his blog:

"I’m going to do a post a day for the remainder of the year, on a dozen albums I lived with extensively and that I feel are important in one way or another."

I guess the album that had the biggest impact on me, and hence number one, is...

right behind that :
cima verde (chris watson) / erstlive 007 / erstlive 006 / the breadwinner / one day / till my breath gives out

a lot of ersts, yes.

probably 'blasen' (lexer/wright) should get a mention too.

man, that MGMT band sucks pretty bad but that song is kind of a guilty pleasure, and I'm not really guilty about any music I like usually.
