experimental music from africa
Re: experimental music from africa
One important record I forgot : Ernst Reijseger with Mola Sylla with Serigne C.M. Gueye - Janna.
http://www.winterandwinter.com/index.php?id=828
This is a collaboration between Reijseger from the Netherlands and both other musicians from Senegal.

Hey, thanks for posting, you were faster than me
I will already have to make some corrections (a few links pointing to Discogs don't work, I don't know why) and will had a few more artists by tonight.

Re: experimental music from africa
This guy is alive (~98 years old now) and is a professor at my university. He seems to be doing pretty well--I saw him dancing at a gallery show a few months ago. I'd love to have a chat with him sometime. I'm sure he's got some great stories. Apparently he was one of the pioneers of early electronic music.cdrk wrote: 1. Yes he's alive, I know
I have to try to contact him (by phone his assistant told me) to make an interview. And yes he's one of the pioneers ; the piece I presented on the radio was recorded in 1944.

Mali: Le Hoddu peul | The fulani Hodu (Ocora)
Recent recording (2002-2006) of 10 semi-composed pieces that talk of the human world and the invisible world of the spirits of the bush. Haunting music by Falani musicians (mostly nomadic people that dwell the Sahelian Sudanese zone from Guinea to Chad) that often disappear in abandoned places for weeks in search of the secret tune.
Very highly recommended, comes with a very well written essay (English/French) on the practice of the musicians and the witchcraft associated with their instruments and the music.
There is a short clip (22min) of Bara Sambarou (one of the players on this disc) here:

Congotronics is a beautiful album.cdrk wrote:As some also say, it also depends on what we or they call experimental music and what the definition(s) of this genre can be.
Konono N°1 in RDC is a good example. To some it's a fantastic industrial/experimental record. To me it sounds (as good as it is) like traditional music amplified through some DIY gear. Possibly a mini revolution but the primal intention was to make it louder with few tools neither to create a new genre not to make a revolution and conceptual art, such as some (dadaists, futurists, etc.) did in the past.
This is an experiment but the result is not experimental.

Re: experimental music from africa
Koch-Schütz-Studer & El Nil Troop did Heavy Cairo Traffic in '97. It's a great record, though I get the sense that the experimental stuff was mostly layered on top by the Swiss guys, rather than truly being part of the conversation.

Just a word of warning, when I clicked this link it went to one of those phony malware virus sites that screw with your computer...bedouin wrote:There is a short clip (22min) of Bara Sambarou (one of the players on this disc) here:

Yeah I know, I'm just saying. Could have been unrelated, but that's what happened on this PC I use at work. Nothing bad ever happens from the internet on my Mac.bedouin wrote:dailymotion is a site like youtube

Re: experimental music from africa
Ok, thanks I'll check if there's something wrong with this but i don't remember so.
During the year I might make a massive update regarding the database (more info, biographies etc. in stead of links and short descriptions only) but it takes time, I'm not always free and still have many other links to add and check. So I may be slow...
