Chris Watson - Constable's 'Cornfield'

Musician and leading wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson will discuss the sounds of wildlife and weather in The Cornfield and the changes in sound pollution since Constable’s time. He will end with a performance of the piece he has written in response to this painting for the new Sounds of the Gallery Tour.

New compositions by Blixa Bargeld; John Butcher and Gino Robair; Luciano Chessa; James Fei; Ellen Fullman; Carla Kihlstedt and Mattias Bossi; Ulrich Krieger; Pablo Ortiz; Mike Patton; the sfSoundGroup; Elliott Sharp; Text of Light; and Theresa Wong. Performances by John Butcher and Gino Robair; Luciano Chessa; Ellen Fullman; Carla Kihlstedt and Mattias Bossi; Ulrich Krieger; ensemble players from Magik*Magik Orchestra; the sfSoundGroup; Text of Light; and Theresa Wong. Futurist sound artist Luigi Russolo constructed special hand-cranked instruments to realize an expanded field of orchestral sound. Called intonarumori (noise intoners), these instruments could produce noises — explosions, howls, buzzes, hisses — not usually employed in Western music. Luciano Chessa, a Bay Area-based composer and Russolo scholar, has overseen the recreation of 16 intonarumori and has curated this concert of original and newly commissioned scores

I saw Butcher/Robair/Hsu last night - good stuff, with Robair in especially fine form. Not sure if my wallet or my marriage can stand for me to go to the Russolo thing.

I'll be driving over to Oakland for the set at Soja on Saturday.
Had the chance to hear Butcher and Robair in Sacramento at a very intimate show, which must have been a sort of last minute arrangement, as most of us there only learned of it the day before.
Butcher was phenomenal in control, and the duo with Robair was extremely well executed - nice string of shows they've got this week as well.
Due to work I'll be missing the Intonarumori session... curious to hear feedback from anyone who goes.

On Thursday 29th, Malcolm Goldstein (violin) and Matthias Kaul (percussion) will perform Cage's Eight Whiskus, Variations II, Composed Improvisation, Cheap Imitation and Ryoanji.

Yesterday I attended the concert of Malcolm Goldstein & Matthias Kaul in Barcelona. Malcolm played Eight Whiskus, Cheap Imitation and, not in the programm, Chorals. Matthias played Composed Imporvisation, a quite simple score with time brackets and indications of different ways to excite several small percussion instruments. Then both played Ryoanji and a great reading of Variations II, that sounded very different to their recording for Wergo around ten years ago. In the Wergo release Matthias played glass harmonica, while yesterday he played vibraphone. Beautiful concert!

Terry Riley's Pipe Dreams, a rare solo concert by the composer/pianist and minimalist pioneer, will reverberate throughout the museum until midnight. Audience members are invited to bring cushions, blankets and sleeping bags to make themselves comfortable on the gallery floor. Upper galleries will be open for the duration of Riley's performance. The concert is preceded by a book launch for MATRIX/Berkeley: A Changing Exhibition of Contemporary Art, published by BAM/PFA
