bump with details on the Sat night Keith solo set, Anne/Richard will open, show starts at 10 PM, be there!!!

=============================================

Keith Rowe was in the forefront of the initial wave of European free improvisation, co-founding the AMM collective in 1965 and originating the tabletop guitar. The tabletop guitar has remained at the center of his ever-evolving table of electronics and gadgets ever since, becoming increasingly stripped down and minimal in recent years. Having mostly performed within AMM until the late 90's, he's since been involved in a wide range of projects, including a slew of the most prominent Erstwhile releases. He's
the cornerstone musician of the label, and his wide range of releases over the last decade stands with the strongest bodies of work of the last century in improvised music.

Tonight will be an early record release concert for his stunning 'September', recorded in Manhattan on 9/11/11 and out very soon on the ErstLive imprint.

Anne Guthrie is an acoustician, composer, French horn player, and writer living in Brooklyn, NY. Her music combines her knowledge of acoustics and contemporary composition/improvisation. Her electronic music has focused on exploiting the natural acoustic phenomena of unique architectural spaces through minimal processing of field recordings. As a composer, her work has focused on the orchestration of non-musical sounds, speech in particular.

Richard Kamerman prefers small sounds to large sounds but that doesn’t mean they are always performed as quiet sounds. He also likes accidental sounds and collecting his instruments from people’s trash on the street. He has no time for cigar breaks.

Anne and Richard have been playing together since 2005 in the trio Delicate Sen with Billy Gomberg. Their first documented duo collaborations will be released on the Erstwhile imprint ErstAEU in 2013.

Should "September" get it's own thread? The recording quality, the material and the playing really make it a stand out in a great body of work.

I got it removed, mainly because that trio really found it's space int he studio the next day, and I didn't want that gig to represent it.

bumping this because Keith is back in NYC for two shows in November, so for non-FBers:

a duo with filmmaker Malcolm Le Grice, they have done this a handful of times in Europe, but this will be the US debut, in the Performa 2013 fest:

http://13.performa-arts.org/event/man-with-a-projector

then I helped set up a solo show the following weekend, future ErstAEUers Tucker Dulin/Ben Owen opening:

(this will be the 104th and 105th sets of Keith's that I've seen)

hither and dither, i found myself hanging on some of keith's words, mid-explanation, as i would with larry merchant's deliberations on HBO. engaging stuff. tilbury's enthusiasm for the piano.. seriously great to hear these two dialoging, even just sonically.

Out of topic, but he's sorely missed in this year's broadcasts. And now Lederman is out of many cards, so it sucks double.

I laughed out loud twice.
Once when Tilbury was using metaphors from pottery and the interviewer responded "why do you talk in terms of pottery and not music" and Tilbury had to awkwardly explain the use of metaphor.
Second when the interviewer responded to this by lunging unexpectedly in the other direction and asking what was the centrifugal force of the potting wheel in Tilbury's playing.

I couldn't work out if the interviewer was just intentionally trolling him.

Has anybody heard the 2 recordings of Keith Rowe with Trevor Watt's Amalgam ('Wipe out' & 'Over the Rainbow')?

Worthwhile for a used-to-be-completionist that used to love jazz/EFI?

Yes, looks interesting - I see Wipeout is going for £20 over at the FMR website, which isn't bad for a 3CD set.

I am just listening to this stuff. Its pretty funky. From what I understand was meant to be a cash cow and was not.

from Brian O's still far from being published book on this period:

"He strolled into a local musical instrument establishment, bought a couple of “how to” books (“Improvised Rock Guitar” and “20 Great Rock Guitar Licks”), dutifully learned the bland, clichéd sequences contained therein and regurgitated them in performance with Amalgam, albeit slightly camouflaged and played more roughly than presumably intended. Just as he had done with AMM, hearkening back to what he had learned studying Gurdjieff, Rowe felt no need to inform Watts or the other musicians what he was in fact doing. "

I guess it's pretty no wave-y in this regard. a kind of blankness. a minimalist pastiche of cliches.
I read a bit of the liner's while I was ripping the jams, and there was a story about them being given a trophy for 1,000,000 practices as a joke by friends because they practiced a ton and gigs were scarce.

except I think it's important to note that Keith was the only one of the group working that way. as it says in that quote, he didn't tell the other musicians what he was doing.

it doesn't sound like telling trevor watts a damn thing would have mattered! though i am speculating.
hearing keith's perspective helps me situate this perhaps closer to the no wavy- someone plays noisy stuff while the drummer does some disco vibe- than it is to say soft machine or henry cow which my brain keeps conjuring. I see what you are saying is not the same as the no wavy bands though, which may be more through composed, everyone on the same page but i do think there is something about his stance which has a valence with the no-wave/no-irony thing perhaps?
