Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

Jesse wrote:Rudd was here last month, sent me comps through Facebook (!). Got to hang briefly with him and his partner. He was amused at my telling him (like a fan boy) that I brought my original Emanem copy of School Days for his signature. His recorded output is, relative to age and gigging, not huge. But vital, occasionally essential-the Shepp release is fantastic, Rudd penetrated those tunes, then added his own flavor.

Person who turned me onto Rudd was the Master of Audio, Mr. Sharp Ears himself - Paul Haines - the guy who recorded School Days session in NYC back in 63, the guy largely responsible for New York Eye and Ear Control.....
Jesse - you may be interested in picking up Secret Carnival Workers - a collection of Paul's written work and Darn It! [released by American Clave sometime around the early 90s] - to hear Paul's written work put to music by a multitude of his friends....

Strong interplay (Hartsaw, the reed player, is close to imitative of Evan here, however), acute listening, Beuys-inspired emancipatory collective.

Harrison Birtwhistle - The Last Supper
libretto: Robin Blaser
Image
couldn't find the album cover... here's a shot from the premiere

Hearing this for the first time and really liking it. It's kind of a shame there isn't more discussion of Birtwhistle (on IHM or anywhere else I'm aware of), his best stuff is just fantastic... There're 4 great collections of Birtwhistle composition at the Avant-Garde Project (big ups, loudav), but beyond that I'm somewhat in the dark.
I was particularly interested in this as Blaser's one of my favourite poets (and something of a local legend, having moved up above the 49th parallel after the SanFran/Berkeley thing started to dissolve).
