First time for a lot of it. Over the last couple of months I've been digging into a lot of jazz, which has never really been a big part of my listening before. I feel a big Braxton obsession coming on, among other things.

Re-visiting this one. Edited recordings from 2004, on FK's Room Temperature label. Really good.

David Sylvian - Manafon

the artwork is terribly great. I am really digging this record. Fuck the things I've said about him in the past. This record is great.

Those early ones were a great run.

Has anyone else heard this guy? He's a shockingly great shakuhachi player. Seek him out.

I have Wind Songs (lp on Siwa). Great stuff.

NP: Shangaan Electro. 180BPM South African electro pop. Pretty amazing. On honest jon's.

Luc Ferrari Ephemeres I & II [alga marghen]

drone haters can keep on blindly hating but this really is a knockout. I was sceptical about both pieces, I'm not a fan of voice samples but the massed mumbles on the first track really work for me - maybe its because I can get behind the content (slightly sci-fi musings on computers serving those in power) and much of the sense is confused in either the processing or through weight of numbers. I failed too to imagine how even ferrari could pull off psychedelic blues guitar (no idea who is playing this btw, ??) among a tape composition but have to say part 2 kicks all of david daniell, kfw, alan licht's guitar drone-works (all of which I variously like/admire) into a cocked hat. I would never have imagined that my two favourite drone records of the year would be by dead composers but this and the Tenney/Zeitkratzer are definitely up there.

. . .this is what separates the brilliant from the bums much of the time in the INA-GRM realm, and I generally hate vocal treatments, Araça Azul aside.
