howsthatsound wrote:- all referenceable content (within reason) should be linked (eg if you mention a record, the name of the record should be a link to info about that record)
Hmm well there are plenty of links embedded at PT I just finished reading the review of Poor Trade and there's a link in there. As Dan says, these things take time and I'm personally just pleased he is getting a few issues out a year now when I'd feared we'd lost PT forever.
howsthatsound wrote:- most if not all images should link to a larger size and if they are part of a series the, series "set" should be linked
I personally don't see why this "should" be the case. It might be occasionally nice to see a bigger image but thats a lot of work you are describing there that I'm very sure Dan hasn't the time to mess about with.
howsthatsound wrote:- while you're at it, i'd take the "bold" off of the body text. it makes the artiles difficult to read, and unneccesarilly long.
It looks fine to me. Speaking as someone with a design background myself I'm not a big fan of the PT look overall, but the bold type is no issue to me. However I love the idea that the articles get longer if you make the font weight heavier!
howsthatsound wrote:please don't take this personally, i work in this field, and what i detail above is pretty important and would be a big improvement if implemented.
What you detail might make a few improvements, but not really worthwhile ones given the time they would take to implement for each issue, and I really don't see any of them as important at all.

nevertheless, it's a scientific fact that non-bold text is easier to read.

going to the printers this week:

these are really monitor-dependent, and change quite a bit even between my screen and Yuko's, but I thought I'd post them anyway.

yeah, that's right, although actually the first five erstlive releases all used chairs from tonic and the plan at that time was just to keep that template regardless of venue, but we decided to make that more specific for this batch (these two and the Keith/Toshi one that we're still not sure about releasing or not, which relates less to how good it is and more to how many other projects are waiting to be released ahead of it).

that was a long sentence.

Tokyo critic Yoshiyuki Kitazato published a lengthy review of the festival this week in Japanese, on a social networking site (mixi). he wrote a book earlier this year on Takayanagi, Toshi and Sachiko, he's the current Japanese critic who Yuko respects the most, and he's happily given permission for Yuko to translate it and for me to put it on my new text site, erstwords. it'll be four parts, the first is up now:

http://erstwords.blogspot.com/

(don't criticize the design, as its point right now is basically to be functional and this is the only template which allows wider pix. this will improve as time goes on.)

actually, the blog one is the other book he wrote that was published this summer, his collected blog writing along with a bunch of pieces written for magazines. that one has a close up of his face as the front cover.

the one on the table there is titled 'musics', and has chapter headings like "noise", "listening", "film", "onkyo", "jazz", "songs", "space".

we'll probably try to include one or two of those chapters on the 'erstwords' site at some point, if otomo is cool with it.

oops, failure.

but the japanese scene really has taken a serious approach to writing about their own music. maybe more projects like jons site will convince other musicians to try their hand at it.

man, i'd really like to see someone getting official translated versions of some of these writings done.
i wonder how much of this stuff sells in japan, versus what would sell here. could you even break even doing translation and reprint?

no chance.

though in japan i believe one if not both of those books has sold out of its initial (only?) printing.

yeah, that's what we've just started doing, in case you didn't notice. :) yuko has a pretty thorough collection and is in the midst of looking through them for some appropriate pieces, then we'll ask the writer/s if they're OK with it.
