1 untitled piece, TRT ~20 minutes

This turned up early last week and I thought it might be of interest to some here.

AMM at the International House in Chicago, April 15, 2001

a great excuse to finish your taxes early, or to file for an extension.

The Empty Bottle Butcher/Davis show was a Malachi Ritscher recording. Malachi made some memorable recordings at that place.

A recent performance of The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars, with Philip Jeck, from May 16, 2009.

The recent Cut & Splice Living Rooms Festival, both evenings. Lucier, Tape That, The Domestic Appliance Audio Research Society, Lescalleet and Onda on the first, Lucier, Levene, Labelle, and von Hausswolf & Duncan on the second. There was a review of these concerts in a recent Wire.

If anyone still likes Zorn, there's a recent Cobra performance from the North Sea Jazz Festival last month.

All audience recordings. I haven't listened to all of these yet, but the ones I've heard sound fairly decent.

There are also some FM broadcasts of recent vintage classical, including some Stockhausen (Tierkreis for chamber orchestra, no commercial recording available AFAIK), Xenakis (a percussion concert that included an excerpt from Pleiades) and an Henri Pousseur memorial concert.

I'm not downloading it, ut thought it was worth noting that a Melvins show in Melbourne from 2003 that just went up on Dime has been categorized as "Skiffle".

Must have been their all-acoustics American roots music tour.

That "Skiffle"-thing seems to be a running gag overthere.

I think some folks on IHM will be interested in the NYC Incus festival recorded last night. Musicians include Cyro Baptiste, Min Xiao-Fen, Fred Frith, Milford Graves, Susie Ibarra, George E Lewis, Richard Teitelbaum, and John Zorn and the recording sounds pretty good.

LAMPO brought AMM to Chicago in April 2001 for a series of shows. A solo Keith Rowe show at ODUM, a trio wirh Eddie Prevost, Zerang and Vandermark and the AMM show on April 15, 2001 at University of Chicago's International House.

Graham, please grab those off dimeadozen for me. Looking forward to getting a copy of your new work.

Luciano Berio: Bewegung
b/w Morton Feldman: Violin & Orchestra, from a French radio broadcast, performed by Orchestre Symphonique de la Radio de Francfort, Emilio Pomárico (condutor); Carolin Widmann (violon)

Haven't completed the download yet, so I don't know about the quality, but there's only one commercial recording of the Feldman available.

There's a new posting from the David Torn Prezens tour, with Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, and Tom Rainey, an audience recording from a small club in Cologne. Four long improvs and an encore, pretty good sound.

So I finally I gave this a listen and for the most part wasn't too taken by it. I have the Col Legno recording with this piece as well and was again not that taken by it. Its been a while since I heard it but IIRC I felt that the orchestra in that recording seemed a bit shakey and the recording also seemed a bit thin. This one OTOH seems ponderous and uneven. Now I don't know this piece outside these two recordings, so its possible its just not to my taste in Feldman. I do like For Samuel Beckett so while I definitely think Feldman's best work was his chamber pieces I'm not a priori opposed to his orchestral pieces. I would like to hear this one and Piano and Orchestra as well done by other ensembles though to determine this.

There's a large collection of John Cage broadcasts from the Netherlands, five CDs worth, covering every part of his career. I particularly enjoyed Barbara Hannigan's version of 45' for a speaker with various members of the Ives Ensemble, and there are also a couple versions of Atlas Eclipticalis, a Sonatas & Interludes (by Rene Eckhardt), Sixteen Dances for two prepared pianos, Quartets I-VIII, an orchestral Cheap Imitation, some percussion pieces and various shorter works. Number piece fans will find another version of Sixty-Eight and the first Four (for string quartet).

Morton Feldman's 1st String Quartet (the "short" one, about 95 minutes in this performance) played by Kronos, recorded by WDR & broadcast in 1982. There's no sample and I haven't completed the download so I can't comment on audio quality.

core sound cardioids>fel preamp>zoom h2>48khz 124bit>usb>fades, levels, editing & resampling to 44/16 in Audition>tracked in CDWave>flaced in TLH (level 8)

sq: I'd give this an B+. There are some noises that sound like mic knocking at the beginning of the first track, but to be fair to myself I think a lot of them are from Yoshihide. I was in two minds as to whether I should include the first set as maybe it lacks interest as just a recording, apart from the intensity of the live performance, but here it is anyway. samples in comments.

Most interested people will probably see this on the flamenco thread, but just in case, a broadcast of a performance by flamenco vocalist Diego El Cigala just went up for downloading:

tilbury playing skempton:
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-deta ... ?id=255554
someone else grab it to get a few more seeders on it.
John Tilbury plays the music of Howard Skempton
Düsseldorf (Germany)
salon des amateurs

John Tilbury = piano

1) Familiar (1995)
2) Interlude 1 (1989)
3) Second Interlude (1986)
4) First Prelude (1971)
5) Simple Piano Piece (1972)
6) Eirenicon (1973)
7) Eirenicon 4 (1985)
8) Senza licenza (1974)
9) Chorale (1976)
10) A Roma (1992)
11) Of Late (1992) in memory of John Cage
12) June '77 (1977)
13) Campanella (1981)
14) Postlude (1978)
15) Friday's Child (1979)
16) One for Martha (1974)
17) Campanella 4 (1985)
18) Maestoso (1990)
19) after-image (1990)
20) applause

Total Time: 37:12

Source/Lineage: DAT – Adobe Audition - flac – dime
Quality: A-

This one is for unclemeat.

Notes:
I did slight hiss reduction but tried to keep the piano sound intact so some hiss is still present.
I cut inappropriate applause after the first piece.
The final applause is in a separate track.

Trivia:
This was the first set of three that evening (followed by Marcus Schmickler's solo electronics set and a duo set of TIlbury and Schmickler).
From the program leaflet: "Howard Skempton's piano music comprises three cathegories: Landscapes, Melodies and Chorales. For this evening's programme John Tilbury is playing a selection of 19 Chorales"
Tilbury played a dark blue colored upright piano.
There exists a CD of Skempton's piano music played by John Tilbury (alternatively called "Well, Well, Cornelius" and "Skempton: Pianoworks", the latter a remastered edition, both on Sony), with some of these and many other pieces.
