I think I discovered The Drones this year, though it may have been late last year. The National finally came into my radar. Pretty traditionally indie rock and probably of little interest to this board but I love the lead singer's soporific delivery and the sometimes strange and grimy imagery he has a tendency to conjure up. I don't totally agree with the following analysis by Tiny Mix Tapes, but it still cracks me up: On 2005?s Alligator, The National?s Matt Berninger told Karen, "Fuck me and make me a drink," solidifying himself as the Clive Owen of this indie rock shit.

As far as literature goes, I finally read and subsequently loved Kafka's parables, got into Gogol's strangeness, and just suddenly realized that I love Robert Browning.

Kevin Parks as an improviser.

I'd known IHM's own inharmonik for some years, but primarily as a composer and sorta academic music dude, but in 2007 I finally did a bunch of playing with him, and he knocked me out, only partly because his improvisation is totally separate from his academic work.

I've played with a lot of people, but none of my usual partners has the sort of harmonic ear that KP has; it adds a dimension to the music that is new to me, in a way ("Derinkuyu" on our disc is a great example of his harmonic concept. Nobody else I know personally can hear/think that way).

I guess this may seem self-serving since I have a duo disc with him out now, but it's not meant to be. The disc is a result--not a cause--of the sentiment behind this encomium.

Yes I did. I bought it earlier this year in a record strore in Tokyo. I didn't know Ullmann, but coming from Edition RZ, it should be good. So I bought it. According to the artwork, it was released in 2005. Excellent music too. Any other recommendation from Ullmann?

Truly amazing work. I also agree with your championing of Asher. I think he posts here (or at least lurks) but he's put out a stellar body of work this year. I've been enamored with "In Camera" for the past few weeks.

Difficulties?
No, not really. A sense of solitude perhaps, occasionally, but the room I'm staying has such an incredible view. Can be overwhelming.

Not quite.

They just live in cities on opposite ends of the States. They still record when they can. Plenty of new stuff on the horizon.

Fermentation -- making my own sauerkraut, kim chee, and alcoholic beverages. This is largely a result of Sandor Katz's book Wild Fermentation, which is totally amazing.

Wild Fermentation is indeed good, and got me eating lots of sort of pungent foods. His more redent book, Food Revolution or something, is a bit more scattered and whatnot. His first book was big discovery for me in 2005.

in addition to graham/dave cdr i wanna mention some more disoveries:

1) Blood Stereo - well i think it was very good that Bennett broke his ribs (except for Bennett obviously). i never really took time to listen to BS before, but they gave a great performance in Tel Aviv, and are really nice people (as opposed to, reportedly, Whitehouse). i have three cds of theirs now (one courtesy of Dylan)

2) His Dark Materials - i am a big fan of young adult fiction, and this is cream of the crop, up there with The Neverending Story and such. been a while since i enjoyed reading so much. great book all around, and really stand out because of the great story and great imagination of the writer (which is even less common than great story telling). and the church are bad, for a change.

3) Thanks to compiling the last IHM comp i discovered that some folks on the forum make pretty good music, and i think even the stuff that i didn't like was quite solid (and it wouldn't make the cut otherwise). looking forward for the new one.
