Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

I've tried to listen to Joe Colley's Desperate Attempts at Beauty and now I have a terrible headache.
Is there a thread dedicated to Joe Colley ? I think he definitely deserves it.

Bruno Maderna 'Quadrivium'

Just picked up a cd of his today. Basically unfamiliar with the man beyond the name, anyone got any avoid/ seek out advice for him?

favorites of mine:
Serenata n.2 - Concerto (for piano) - Hyperion

avoid:
I don't like his tape music (except for "Notturno")
Don Perlimplin
I don't like certain facets in his chamber music output that much (in particular: stuff with flute, chamber settings with strings)
. . . .

Bruno Maderna: unlike JF, I quite like his electronic music, especially 'Invenzione su una voce' [on bhvaast cd 'acousmatrix 7'], and I also prefer his chamber music to his orchestral stuff (though for me this is true of 90+% of composers)

Three favourite discs (tho I'm not sure if any are currently available):

Music for Strings, perf. Arditti Quartet [montaigne]
Hyperion, perf. Asko Ensemble & les jeunes soloistes [montaigne]
Musica da Camera, perf. Ex Novo Ensemble [stradivarius]

know what's funny ? 99% of the stuff has to be good

otherwise it's like:

"I can't connect with it"
"maybe I should give it another try"
"I guess I wasn't in the right mood"
"it didn't do much for me"

...

I'm interested when someone says he/she hated a record, even in the realm of the wonderful world of experimental music.

"I hated that noodling around with faint noises for 40 minutes"
"I hated those 3 unchanging sine waves that lasted 20 min each"

or maybe an "experiment" cannot fail because the point is to "experiment" ?

keep on keeping on!

hey, julien, I think you've been unfairly subjected to a certain amount of bullying on this forum recently, but don't let that make you bitter & twisted. Thankfully there's bigger & better things in life than web forums.

I don't see much point in people slagging off each other's work in blunt language; there's so much pride and potential hurt bound up in music - especially in an embattled corner like this. Being diplomatic saves us from all getting upset and going for each other's throats. No-one would be the winner then.

so:

"I think it's great" = normal reaction

"I think it sucks" = bitter and twisted

point made ;)

Diplomacy is for chumps. I'd rather see somebody write about WHY they PASSIONATELY HATE my latest recording than not talk about it at all.

I'm far too polite to point out what absolute rubbish that is.

PS your discs are on their way, Richard

thankfully!!!!

no bullying here, julien seems to have strong opinions and plenty of them, and enough of them are unusual that he's going to be called on them sometimes. if that's a problem for you or him or anyone else, feel free to leave.

as for this:

no one's the "winner" now, dude. this form of proposed diplomacy just leads to where we are now, an area of music filled with overly championed/tolerated mediocrity and the occasional gem. 'going for each other's throats' (not that anyone does anything close to that on this site) can be reasonably healthy. if you don't want to hear criticism, don't release music.

How odd..I just got done listening to that one as well.

I keep coming back to it.
