stock11.de - a collective of young German composers and instrumentalists, new to me although they've produced an earlier cd, also on the 'naivsuper' label.

The new disc, which I've been playing a lot, is extremely strong in parts, and a bit annoying in others - though perhaps in a usefully challenging way (?). I feel that something genuinely new is bubbling around in this music. I can't work out how much I like it, but it keeps pulling me back. It's certainly stretching me more than anything else I can think of that I've heard this year.

The disc features just three instrumentalists - the unlikely combination of a countertenor singer (Daniel Gloger), a violist (Jessica Roner) and pianist/'noise-maker' (Sebastian Berweck), but there are various kinds of electronics on all the tracks too.

The composers are Hannes Seidl, Michael Maierhof, Martin Schuttler and Maximilian Marcoli. (I'd only heard of the first 2)

A kick up the pants ideal for anyone up for a challenge / wanting more abrasiveness in their classical music than Wandelweiser offers / feeling that improv has become too safe and codified.

After having listened to three other Melt Banana-CDs before, now playing is Speak Squeak Creak (for the first time, here)

Since the singer is so much fun for me, I don't perceive all that harsh noisy stuff in there as that aggressive. As soon as I picture the vocalist screeming out her lungs, I tend to grin... I mean... she's so absurdly over the top with her penetrant style and there appears to be not much "evil", "bad", "hardcorez" about her... she appears to be funny, witty, lively. And that pretty much shapes my general Melt Banana-perception, it seems.

Anyway ordering ~8-10 M.B.-CDs all at once obviously was a great idea... joyful times ahead.

matt weston - seasick blackout

just arrived today. he described it somewhere as "orchestra music for percussion," which makes sense upon hearing. has an almost 60's/70's free jazz "creative orchestra" vibe going on, with a ton of information and overlapping lines, though with a textural focus and (i think?) some electronics updating it. the last track has keyboards or samples or something, which are fun and feel slightly ironic, in a nice way. good times! gotta hear it louder and on better speakers.

also meant to mention here matt's previous record, "not to be taken away," which is more single-minded, almost study-like digital pieces (processed drums, i guess), plenty of noise and harshness, reminding me of early pita.
