Now playing
Re: Now playing
You beat me to it, jesse.
Funny, David Bauwens asked me about the release earlier tonight on FB. I wrote:
David, Yes, PL/PP is pretty much of a piece, with a consistent aesthetic. Ashley's voice is a tonic for what ails you. The instrumentation is minimal throughout, the drone/noodly piano of Tyranny framing Ashley's metaphysical Middle America "libretto."
Close enough to your synopsis. And you provided the link from Lovely Music, looks like our work here is done.

Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

Re: Now playing

you shouldn't judge a cd by its cover; the music is fantastic
Re: Now playing
Emanem is nonpareil in packaging strong music in terrible covers.

That's about what I'd come up with if I were asked to design an awful record cover.

Re: Now playing
oh dear, I knew I shouldn't have posted that cover....
In principle I think the music is absolutely what matters and covers count for next to nothing, but in this instance I fear that the artwork may have contributed to the music reaching less people than it could and should have. Shame, because it's really really good stuff.
[To be fair to Martin Davidson, recent Emanem covers have got considerably better]

This has some very nice moments, balanced and without anything extra/superfluous.kristin wrote:

Sure, the music's the main thing, but people tend to absorb these things holistically. There was a long, interesting thread about packaging on bagatellen a long time ago, iirc. Maybe worth a look-over.simon reynell wrote:oh dear, I knew I shouldn't have posted that cover....

private parts has been in heavy rotation here too. I really don't mind the cheesy synths.

That's the best of the few John Bisset duos I've heard. The multi-string effect works in its favour. What do you think?simon reynell wrote:

Bisset's duo with Beins from a couple of years later (Chapel, 2000) seemed a bit flat to me, and it suffers badly in comparison with the contemporary Activity Center stuff on the same label.
