Interesting pairing...
this is similar to thing Petr Kotik has done in the past on SEM Ensemble concerts (tho not quite to this degree) - the contrast of 20th century "new music" with much other forms (I think he's used Vivaldi too, but don't quote me).

of course this kind of feat on CD needs strong performances and a good recording, and I'd be interested in a listen to this one.

The samples on Amazon aren't too promising. From a subjective perspective, I don't particularly care for how it sounds to be recorded. But obviously the entire pieces need to be heard.

Not too pleased with that cover... another example of a fine label which began in the '80s and went downhill design-wise after the mid '90s. Sigh...

I have a soft spot for "The Four Seasons", as well as for Cage's "String Quartet", so I would love to hear this recording despite my initial reluctance.

Will check out what Petr Kotik did. Thanks

you'll probably have to check out an SEM concert as I don't think that his programming every made it to CD (given the length of the pieces SEM has recorded).

Does anyone know the story behind "Works by Calder", for which Cage wrote the score ? There is a performance of it played by Cage on Piano Works 4 on Mode, but I am unclear if it's the full performance. I would think not... Moreover, does anyone know if the film is available in some format, somewhere ?? The excerpts on this CD are so appealing, I figured the full thing would be more readily available...

funny that this thread hasn't been bumped all year, with everything that's come out...

I wanted to make sure everyone knew about this somewhat recently released recording of 'Sonatas & Interludes' by James Tenney, on Hat Art. it's great, and I'm not the biggest Cage fan in the world.

also, the Cage/Tudor Shock recordings are well worth investigating, Antoine Beuger's epic (10 hours!) take on Empty Words, etc, etc. it's been quite a year for Cageheads.

I saw Tenney do a lecture/demonstration on the Sonatas and Interludes and then perform them the next night with one lung and pneumonia. Both stand out as the most powerful examples of passion for music I have ever experienced. Tenney loved those pieces and he knew those pieces. A and B-ing it with the Tilbury is interesting. Tenney has access to some things most performers just can't get to, but Tilbury has the touch!

Tenney's cd is very good, one of my favourite recordings of "Sonatas and Interludes". Also recommended are "As it is" (ECM), played by Alexei Lubimov (piano) and Natalia Pschenitschnikova (voice), and "Electronic music for piano" (Stradivarius), played by Ciro Longobardi (piano) and Agostino di Scipio (electronics).

2 of my favorites, both on Wergo:

Variations II / Eight Whiskus / Music for two / Ryoanji
Malcolm Goldstein and Matthias Kaul
Beautifully restrained, spacious versions, with the familiar angularity of Golstein's violin and delicacy of percussionist Kaul.

Dream / Concert for Piano and Orchestra / Freeman Etudes 1-5 / Ryoanji / Radio Music
Stefano Scodanibbio et.al
This is really all over the place, from the lyrical Dream (played as piano/double bass duo here) to the bizarre Radio Music. Stefano Scodanibbio is immense on this disc.

this year i have experience it live performed by Slovenian pianist Nina Prešiček in Ljubljana. It was a special event mixing this work w video that used Calder's mobiles in a 12 hour event where the piece was continuously repeated ...

Oh my, I love that so much. Thanks kindly for posting a link to this film excerpt. I don't know why it's so flipping difficult to find the entire film, or entire soundtrack, for that matter.

The Dream CD is really wonderful. Very well put together, in terms of pieces presented. Not too fond of Wergo's design, though.

Hm. That's good to know. I wonder why it was taken down. Strange. There is a new database on the Centennial site, but it's not as comprehensive, and it doesn't list the albums all the pieces are found on, which I found useful and interesting, especially when it linked back to obscure vinyl or cassettes.

Anybody have a personal favorite past the Sonatas? Mine would be his Quartets.

I witnessed for the first time, a live performance of John Cage. It was... hilarious. And weird.

I can't remember the name of the piece, it was sort of a full orchestra version of Roaratorio, it was loud and sounded like schizophrenia coming to life in wide screen. Freakish. The audience didn't like it, and even the performers looked confused when they were finished. I suppose when you have a full orchestra of college students performing this, confusion is to be expected.

Looked it up, it's called Renga.

So, should you be allowed to talk at a John Cage concert. I say, yes. Please.

I dunno. but clearly it needs to be affordably reissued.
