Probably of limited interest to folks here, but I am going to ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas curated by the Melvins and Mike Patton in a few weeks. I am familiar with less than half of the line-up and was hoping for some recommendations on what not to miss and what to avoid.
Here's the line-up, with some surprising inclusions:

FANTôMAS PERFORMING THE DIRECTOR'S CUT
FARMERS MARKET
ISIS
NEIL HAMBURGER
BERNARD PARMEGIANI
BUTTHOLE SURFERS
J.G. THIRLWELL'S MANOREXIA
BOHREN UND DER CLUB OF GORE
KILL ME TOMORROW
THE DIRTBOMBS
BIG BUSINESS
ZU
THE LOCUST
TORCHE
MELVINS
SQUAREPUSHER
THE BLACK HEART PROCESSION
DäLEK
LEILA
MASTODON
JAMES BLOOD ULMER
THE DAMNED
WHITE NOISE
SOULSAVERS FEATURING MARK LANEGAN
STOCKHAUSEN'S KONTAKTE W/ STEINBERG/WINANT/WOLF
MADLOVE
BOSS HOG
DOUBLE NEGATIVE
RAHZEL
TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS
TWEAK BIRD
OS MUTANTES
MEAT PUPPETS
JOE LALLY (FUGAZI)
MUGISON
MONOTONIX
TARAF DE HAIDOUKS
KOOL KEITH + KUTMASTA KURT
PORN
FENNESZ
VOCAL SAMPLING
LABEQUE SISTERS
GHOSTIGITAL
JUNIOR BROWN
MARTINA TOPLEY BIRD

Must sees for me are Parmegiani, Butthole Surfers, Melvins (last time I saw them was the best rock gig of my life), TJ & the jerks, Fennesz, Fantomas, Isis, Stockhausen and possibly White Noise and Big Business. Anything else? Anyone here going?

Not going but...

BERNARD PARMEGIANI - is a living legend who doesn't perform much. Please go and report!

TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS - is quite an amazing announcement too. Though bands that were "seminal" back then tend to sound like shit 25-30 years later!

OS MUTANTES - same as above (in a totally different genre)

KOOL KEITH + KUTMASTA KURT - Kool Keith was such a badass when he was in the Ultramagnetic MCs. Nowadays I doubt it.

ZU - Saw them live once, a year or two ago: very strong!

STOCKHAUSEN'S KONTAKTE W/ STEINBERG/WINANT/WOLF - always classic.

FENNESZ - yeah sure Fennesz...

Wow!!! Parmegiani....really? Seriously?

I guess if I have to ask, I'm not one of the cognicenti around here but...what is ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas?

I would consider going just to see Parmegiani alone!!

best
Michael

I had my doubts about them too. But they played a KILLER reunion show this summer at the Knitting Factory with Thurston Moore on bass duties.
The grammatical rules associated with diagrammatic reduction become apparent by considering a more tractable diagrammatic representation, applied to the Windsor knot in Fig. 8. - Fink & Mao, Tie knots, random walks and topology, (Physica A 276)

Don't think they hold them at Camber Sands any more, Mudd - at 2000 people they outgrew it. Which was a pity, as I went to three of them there and they rank as some of the best weekends of my life.

Stephen should definitely see Farmer's Market. The best Norwegian/Bulgarian Avant Wedding Band you'll ever see. I've always found their CDs rather ordinary but live they're fantastic.

He played the LMC Festival just over a year ago, and really just played back a pre-recorded piece over a good sound system. I'm not sure how this would work out of doors at a holiday camp in Somerset, but I suspect it could be difficult...

Unfortunately there is nothing else on that bill that would entice me into going along, but I'm interested to hear how the Parmegiani set turns out.

Good times indeed, all fuelled by Alastair's (Blazing Saddles) chili con carne.

Seconded. An ideal band for this festival.

It won't be out of doors Richard, the whole thing is inside the holiday camp. That's an improvement on something like Glastonbury but you'll still be standing the whole time and at Camber Sands some of the rooms got pretty crowded. This is obviously not the environment to listen to certain kinds of music; even quieter 'indie' bands like Low weren't so well suited to it.

Stephen, I hope you have a great time. You can easily pop in to the different halls, sample something and decide whether or not to stay. I always found there was plenty of stuff to do if you want to take a breather from the music. I can also give you a few pointers on how to cheat on the go-karts.

Thanks for the reccs folks.

Yeah I too went to Camber Sands twice, apparently that venue pales by comparison with Minehead, especially when it comes to extra-musical entertainment. I will definitekly be seeing Parmegiani, he's the shock heeadliner as far as I am concerned. I remember reading the blurb about Farmer's market and thinking it sounded like a good jig.

Will report back.

What were you expecting from a tape-composer?

Sten Sandell trio is touring the US at the end of January. Does anybody know/have a link to the dates/places?
