yes, everything is beautiful, good point. I'm all for citing Cage, but do you really think that's true? and even if it is, so what? do you like everything equally because you've found the specific beauty in it? no, of course not, no one does.fauxhemian wrote:"The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. so i'm going to change the rules of this thread and say genre since i don't dare make a new thread for this.
i still can't get into rap.
i'm getting closer, because i can somewhat enjoy people like beans, dizzee, and that new rodan record. i really enjoy a lot of the production work as well (check artists mentioned above), but when they start rhyming over it it just kills it for me.
and my question is, does anyone think that it all revolves on too many cliches still and that the vocals need to evolve in some way as the production? keep in mind that i don't listen to this stuff so feel free to consider me ignorant on this issue. this stems from me hearing mudd play some clouddead for the first time on the radio last night and being terrible dissapointed when the vocals kicked in (the static was doing some awesome things for the instrumental part of this song too).

but those specific beauties change so often that i can't definitively name them. for instance, this afternoon i played 'loveless' in the car and some things about some of the songs sounded completely different and other things that bothered me before didn't. translated = i liked it. listening experiences change with time, and i find in this fact proof that the act of listening is constructed.jon abbey wrote:do you like everything equally because you've found the specific beauty in it? no, of course not, no one does.
i'm not trying to throw a nihilistic wrench into "preferentiality" (although heaven knows it needs a wrench thrown into it every once in a while). i like things, just like cage did. i just find it odd that we get annoyed or bothered when our arbitrary aesthetic criteria don't match others', and then that we feel the need to pontificate about it endlessly (more so in other discussion groups than in this one).
ok, fine, but again, the idea of this thread was to name bands you never connected with at all, at any point in your life. if you feel like you can't do that because you might like anything at some point in your life (not that anyone will come back and crossreference your future likes against posts you make here), then just don't participate, but I think it's interesting, not hateful or whatever.fauxhemian wrote:but those specific beauties change so often that i can't definitively name them.
I'm also of the opinion that the vast majority of all music sucks/is unnecessary, just like any artform, so maybe that's where I differ from some of you guys. it's the endless gems amidst the rubbish that fuels my personal ongoing obsession.
me too.i just find it odd that we get annoyed or bothered when our arbitrary aesthetic criteria don't match others'
well, that seems totally normal to me, you love something, you try to explain the depth of that love in a way that other people can understand so that they can be moved to the same extent that you were. the part I don't understand is getting upset when not everyone agrees with you.and then that we feel the need to pontificate about it endlessly (more so in other discussion groups than in this one).

back to the topic. two bands i never-ever connected with are massive attack and portishead.
i liked tricky's first album, though.
yeah, really. i don't get it. so what if someone says your favourite band sucks? i mean, you know it doesn't. if you get upset, that probably means you are still not sure. tell me john cale sucks, i'll just tell you "not to me".the part I don't understand is getting upset when not everyone agrees with you.

FranK Zappa
why?
because i have fear.
i like to know and listen always new music... but i think that some artists or some kind of music (jazz, rap, ecc ecc) have the power to change our life.
so, i wait the right moment to ear this music.
for many years i don't want to listen jazz.... then, a day i went in a store and i bought Coltrane, Coleman, Sun Ra ecc ecc

No, I'm sorry, it's too late for snack food to save us now.Drinky Crow wrote:Aw. I thought I'd have to express opinions more adamantly to make enemies.Brother Zoot wrote:Drinky Crow and I are now sworn enemies.
Maybe we like the same snack foods or colors of socks or something.
I'm still open to being sold on a lot of those bands, but - as Jon said - a lack of time or interest has kept me from that so far.

I can't tell whether you're being seriuos about this, but if you are serious, why would this worry you? That baffles me. I mean, is it an image thing? Like, if suddenly tomorrow I started liking Kenny G, that would worry me a bit in terms of looking like a completely tastelss nerd tomorrow, but all the artists you mentioned are legitimately talented. Most people who hate them at least recognize they do their thing well.cunnilingus wrote:that's why i'm afraid to post here. there's always a chance i'll become beach boys/stones/beatles/joni mitchel fan some day, even today or tomorrow. like i had with vocals.

I don't take this to mean that everything is or isn't beautiful, just that aesthetics can't be commodified by logic.fauxhemian wrote:"The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. no, of course i'm not worried. i don't care about image, because until i was something like 19 years old i didn't have any friends that listen to music that i do, i don't have many now either. the album i've been listening the most to lately was phantasmagoria by curved air, how's that for an image? i just want to say, that it feels weird when you discuss the band and the qualities that you don't like, and then end up liking it for the very same qualities. or, basically, the post may become dated just in a couple of days.Brother Zoot wrote:I can't tell whether you're being seriuos about this, but if you are serious, why would this worry you? I get it. Sorry, I completely misread your initial post.
