Tindersticks "s/t"

Nice pick. I could easily have chosen that one for my list. Great album; one of those great debuts..

I was a volunteer driver at a festival he played in Atlanta many years ago. After his set with Evan Parker and Paul Lytton (Paul Lovens had prior obligations,) I was to drive him to his hotel. As he was getting in the backseat of my car, I closed my own door, not realizing his hand was in the jam. He screamed bloody murder and the organizers whisked him off to the hospital for X-rays. Fortunately, he wasn't hurt. It scared the hell out of all of us, though, especially me.

I set out last night to make a top 25 with pictures, but ended up adding about 10 times that. the first 2 or 3 pages are in some kind of order (though I can't fathom which), after that I just started looking at my shelves and adding everything that I thought at that moment was 'great stuff' in no order whatsoever (and of course it's by no means finished):

polyphonic wrote: 16 art ensemble of chicago, les stances a sophie
And I noticed that my list looks a lot like several others on here. About a year ago I would have had Can at #1 just like fauxhemian's but with Neil Young at #2. I've also been getting into the first two Big Star albums way more lately.

yeah, radio city prolly would've been on mine if i were doing more than one per artist, and i have a pretty special place in my heart for #1 record too. my top 10 is pretty interchangeable, i'd probably order it differently now anyway. funny about the similar lists... are you a cancer too?

edit: haha, i just heard that art ensemble today for the first time too, really good stuff.

OK, I didn't read all of the 13 pages of top 100 lists, but still, there seems to be a lot of repetition; pink floyd, can, miles davis, neu, nurse with wound, velvets, neil young, etc, etc.

A couple of things I've stumbled across rather recently that has blown my mind over and over are:

-Henry Flynt, Backporch Hillbilly Blues Vol. 1 & 2.
-Harry Partch, The Wayward.
-Captain Beefheart's Lick My Decals Off, Baby.
-Xiu Xiu's The Air Force (a couple of good songs, but lots of filler), but their previous one, La Foret ... Woah! (I guess you sort of have to get past the pretentious-flaming-homosex-sound of his vocals and the wallowing-in-self-pity, but if you can, it's amazing stuff, listen to Saturn from La Foret or Hives Hives from the Knife Play LP).
-The last LP from 3/4HadBeenEliminated on Häpna.
-Arbete & Fritid (beautiful swedish folkprog from '73).
-Hobart Smith, In Sacred Trust: The 1963 Fleming Brown Tapes.

Also, lots of folks like Modern Lovers s/t, but if you haven't already, check out the (John Cale?) demo's they did before the 'real' album.

Not much old stuff around either. Some of the most amazing music is blues and hillbilly stuff from the 20's! Folks that like Jazz, listen up: Blind Willie Johnson, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Roscoe Holcomb, Son House, Charley Patton, Doc Boggs, Fred McDowell, Vera Ward Hall, Mary McDonald, Buell Kazee, Johnny Shines, Bukka White, Skip James, Henry Thomas, Uncle Dave Macon, Tommy McClennan, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Clarence Ashley...

Dylan's basement tapes come from this sort of stuff. I used to worship Dylan as a religion and in the end, Tree With Roots (all the outtakes from the basement tapes) is the best stuff he ever made with the live '66 tour just before that coming in close second.

I'm amazed at the lack of contemporary stuff on these lists. I see re-issued material that I know people have only spent 1-5 years with, but hardly any material that was actually created in that time. Just something I noticed.

My list is coming. I have a running draft in my gmail, as I think of them.
