Christ, I'm so out of touch. I have only now just learnt, on skimming through the new Wire, that my dear friend Bob Gilmore died in January aged 53, losing a three-year battle against cancer (this I only now discovered online). I last saw Bob when he came to a concert I gave with Al Margolis in Ghent in 2008, but prior to that he made several trips to Paris to research his Claude Vivier biography, which appeared in 2014. If you don't know that, or missed out on his fabulous Partch biography, I can recommend both wholeheartedly.
Bob and I met in 1992 when we were both shortlisted for the same teaching post at Dartington College. We bonded (as they say) in the bar, and then again over numerous cans of Ruddles County in the train heading back to London, both convinced that neither of us would get the job. He did (if he hadn't and I had, I don't think I'd be sitting here now writing this), and was a fine and well-respected lecturer both at DCA and later at Brunel. I will miss him very much indeed. Meanwhile, I'll redirect you to his splendid interview with Phill Niblock, if I may. RIP Bobbo my dear dear man.
