James Tenney - Maximusic

Post by sellanraa »

Hi all,

My friend Tim Barnes and I are starting a new duo (mAAs) and were going to try to reinterpret this piece for our first show. We've been looking a bit for the score and any other literature surrounding it and I was hoping after my last request for a Davies essay about Gentle Fire came through I'd try again.

If anyone has any info on the piece and wants to share it privately or on this thread, I'm all ears.

Thanks!
Connor

Oh god... I thought I know that title until realising I actually played this piece in a concert last year.

Considering the performance instructions are very simple and clear I guess you want to learn stuff about the circumstances that piece was created in etc? (I don't know much about that - this piece comes from a sphere in Tenney's oeuvre I'm not very interested in)

I basically used my trashy plinky plonky free jazz setting with preparations and everything, but had to attach the preparations with wires to the drums so they didn't fly around during the loud busy part. One more thing I remember is I was quite disappointed of myself that physical exhaustion set in so early in that busy part. I made the opening roll quite long, so theoretically opened a room to make much more loud dense noise but... no. I really should have done one week of technical exercises for my muscles to be better prepared for a longer stream of "everything at once all the time, at full volume" (usually I'm not bad at that :P)
. . . .
