The british Abyssal comes to mind. They self-released 2 albums on CD-R, Profound Lore is going to professionally print the last one on 1000 copies, later this month or the next. Highly recommended.

Impetuous Ritual features members of Portal. I'm guessing you know Mitochondrion.

I know both Abyssal and Mitochondrion, but not Impetuous Ritual, will check them.

Impetuous Ritual is badass. I'm waiting for a follow up from them. As far as other bands, I guess Temple Nightside is similar to these bands (albeit more straightforward), but I don't think they're up to the same level yet, so I hesitate to recommend them. Beheaded Ouroborous-era Witchrist is fucking great, and I associate them with the general dark death metal area of Portal, but maybe they're too primitive. I'm sure a bunch of bands will be aping the Portal thing soon enough, as they're surprisingly popular now (pitchfork? Sheeit). The thought of indie rockers getting into death metal would be beyond funny -- scrambling over the newest deathgasm release; but I suppose the bad mustache, white high top thing has already been well-established by the crowd that shall not be named, so who knows.

The new Nominon, The Cleansing, is pretty good. I liked their last one,Monumentomb, despite or because of the awesomely bad name-- not sure which. But they're incredibly solid death metal that don't seem to get their due, despite having a gaggle of albums out. Maybe their lack of popular appeal is because they don't ape Incantation or trad. Swedish dm, but instead plunge right down the middle. Good song writing none the less, and powerful delivery. They even sample some Suspiria on "hellwitch," although maybe that's to be expected at this point. Yeah, actually, could live without samples for the rest of my life at this point.

The little I've heard of the new Krypts hits all the right buttons-- slow churning death, with monotone vocals that intone peace, harmony, and strawberry wine... or something like that. I could listen to bands like Krypts all day long. They aren't challenging or forward thinking, or even engaged with a program that would sing praises on these fallacies. They just pummel you into a dreary pulp, an oddly reassuring feeling these days, after collapsing veins on airy nothingness, on art. There's something so ham-fisted and monotonely itself about this kind of death metal. No ulterior motives other than the kill. It's not dumbed-down, as much as it's single-minded and focused into a mucky, murky brilliance. This is not the multitude. It's not for you. Or me.

You really triggered my curiosity with this.

Beyond Creation signed to Season Of Mist and their criminally underrated debut is being reissued soon. Which is excellent, if you like 8 string guitars, fretless bass insanity and "progressive technichal death metal" which I happen to a great deal. No Obscura or Decrepit Birth on the horizon so this will tide me over until then.

These bands do not sound like Portal....

oh man, you and me both. no Negri or Hardt implied. i'm sitting in a bar pumping dance music right now, and all I can say is that Krypts is totally for me at this moment. i think what i was meaining (stoicly of course) at the time is that the album struck me as a complete dissassociation with ideology insofar as ideology standing for a process that legitmates a political power, or social cue. Of course, I'm probably completely wrong. When I listen to it now I just hear dudes playing music.

I'm going to agree with Holyghost, the new Vassafor is pretty great, btw. In fact, it's probably one of the best of my 2013. Murky great.

And so it goes, I type this whenever back and they wrap up recording on a new LP.... fucking amazing news, definitely an underrated band if there ever was one.

The new Sacriphyx arrived and I can't wait to spin it. This should be on everyone's list of "things to watch out for that will fuck their minds sideways"

I know the tech death stuff doesn't really rate high here, but the brutal new effort by Wormed really shredded my face today.

This is on Nuclear War Now!, right? Cauz based on your recommendation I'm listening to this on bandcamp, but at first hearing it seems rather dull and bland, not really a mindfuck. Maybe too midtempo-ish for me... Cool logo though.

edit -- maybe I was a bit too fast here, the last 2 songs are kinda clicking. Definitely going to listen to it again. It's kinda catchy.

From what I've heard (the 7" and the split with Stargazer) they do the Hellenic BM thing REALLY well. But I suppose it's going to come down to how much you like Varathron and Rotting Christ and bands of that style. Personally I love that stuff so a band replicating that style is a no-brainer for me (same with W.A.I.L. to a certain extent, I suppose) :P

It took NWN a few years to sell out of the Stargazer 12" split that was limited to 250 copies so clearly they have a somewhat limited appeal.....

I dig early Rotting Christ like any respectable human being, and I enjoy Varathron. I've only heard Sacriphyx songs here and there. I always felt like they were kind of good but ultimately not super memorable. That doesn't mean much, as I've revised alot of my opinions from both poles. And undoubtedly I'll check out the new album. NWN has always been my kind of metal label, as he'll release shit that should probably be hated but is weirdly loved like Revenge and Conqueror, while also putting out seriously for the heads shit like necrophago and the necrobutcher demos (among many others), then throws in all of the Villains records that are kind of beyond any label at this point -- wait, why not -- blackened sleaze metal? Either way, it's kinda ridiculous how good 90 percent of it is. I could live with out some of the 3rd string death metal like ignmiagiaguous or whatever. But fuck it- I'm hopefully gonna go see Bestial Raids in Chicago soon.

I really liked the first Ignvomous LP but that last one left me cold, cold, cold and not in the grimm forest way.....

As far as the Sacriphyx, I totally dig them, the LP finally arrived the other day and it's a real monster, I just dig that they're doing exactly what they want and while aping a style add their own unique twist. I never like saying something is the best ever though because I'm quick to revise my opinions too....

I will say the last Stargazer split is probably the best metal LP in a thousand years, however :P :geek:

I haven't been spinning much else besides the new Suffocation. Best record of 2013 so far.

Digging Krypts and Beyond Creation a lot... thx for the recommendations. Currently listening to Sterbend "Dwelling Lifeless" from 2006, which is very Burzum-ish, and a sci-fi tech-grind group called Wormed. Need to get the new Voivod as well...

I mentioned Wormed a couple posts up, still digging their new one.

God, nothing funnier than getting Dismember's Like An Everflowing Stream double lp from my Mom for my birthday...

I finally have started to listen to the Pallbearer that everyone seemed to be jazzed on last year. It's good, really good in fact-- the first track is magnificent. I'm not the biggest doom fan, but this is killer. I've been listening to that and the old Graves At Sea/Asunder split lately, which is obviously fucking amazing. If it all was as good as that split...

speaking of doom, for those more knowledgeable of the genre than me, what are some recommendations (I know and like the crusty stuff like Noothgrush, Eyehategod, Corrupted, burning witch etc. already)....
