Steve Roach and ethno ambient recommendations, please

Post by Zeno Marx »

I'm back in an ethno ambient phase, and I'm looking for Steve Roach recommendations in particular. I'm open to any artist and album that might be found extraordinary, though. Feel free to educate.

Let's start off with what I do know. I'm a big fan of Tuu. Also well schooled in Hybryds, Voice of Eye (though I really don't think of them in this arena), Temps Perdu?, Jeff Greinke, Jorge Reyes, Life Garden, Tam Quam Tabula Rasa, and the wonderful compilations of Twilight Earth and Ahimsa. Not so much a fan of Vidna Obmana or O Yuki Conjugate.

The Roach albums I do like are: Early Man, Dynamic Stillness, The Shaman's Heart, and Kiva. I prefer the darker tones and less poppy/electronica beats, and no percussion at all is great with me. I enjoy the tribal percussion when it manages to avoid goofy electronica and quasi-techno convention. Don't care for the lighter and brighter tonal range that places a piece firmly in New Age. I suspect most of his work is within that realm, but because I've found albums that were at least close to darker ambient, I'm hopeful to find more. Anything blatantly displaying his admiration for Klaus Schulze is also welcome. I love krautrock.

Thank you. I gave it a listen on youtube. The instrumentation isn't of this style. That almost sounds like post-rock, or whatever it is they call it.

Maybe ethno ambient is an outdated term. It's been around a long time. The bigger name associated with it is Vidna Obmana. Tribalism amongst ambient textures; percussion, rhythms, chants, meditational repetition. No drum kits.

Thanks. Although this means you - and it - are getting a mention in my suicide note.
