+1 on the quartets with Sonny Clark. It's amazing they kept these unreleased for so many years (pity they didn't keep the original artwork).
also, anyone who digs Burrell should check
Thad Jones - 'After Hours', and
Kenny Dorham - 'Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia'

No mention yet of Rod Poole's "The Death Adder"?

Both E# and the Cocteau Twins where people I considered for a moment to include as well.

Another one: No Wave by James Blood Ulmer.

I listened to a few Trout Mask Replica tracks again today, and I see there's really a point to including that album here (as done above).
. . . .

Perhaps an album by/with Burkhard Stangl, one by Dinosaur Jr, Hans Reichel's Death of the Rare Bird Ymir , Spirit? I realize I have to listen to this stuff all over again.

There have to be at least 1000 great guitar records! Nevertheless here are my favorite eleven in 2012:

King of the Delta Blues Singers/Robert Johnson (Columbia, 1961, recorded 1936/37)
The Art of Julian Bream (RCA, 1960)
The Bridge/Sonny Rollins (Jim Hall) (RCA, 1962)
Death Chants, Break Downs & Military Waltzes/John Fahey (Takoma, 1964)
Electric Ladyland/Jimi Hendrix (Reprise, 1968)
The Best of Bobby Womack/The Soul Years (Capitol, late '60's to early '70's)
A Tribute to Jack Johnson/Miles Davis (John McLaughlin) (Columbia, 1971)
Tonight's the Night/Neil Young (/Danny Whitten) (Reprise, 1975)
Marquee Moon/Television (Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd) (Electra, 1977)
Entertainment!/Gang of Four (Andy Gill) (Warner Bros, 1979)
Opposite/Taku Sugimoto (HatNOIR, 1998)

Man, I was waiting for somebody to finally name this. Is it just the case that so many people have appropriated this sound/approach by now that its original impact has been diminished? Though to be fair, Andy Gill names Wilko Johnson as a big influence. In addition to that, I'll name these:

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue
B.B. King - RPM Hits
Ramones - Leave Home
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation (for the *great* combination of Robert Quine on lead and Ivan Julian on rhythm guitar)
Wes Montgomery - Boss Guitar
Charlie Christian - Genius of the Electric Guitar
Leroy Carr - the Best of Leroy Carr (for the *great* Scrapper Blackwell)
Public Image Limited - Second Edition
Grant Green - Sunday Mornin'

Not naming Keith Rowe or Annette Krebs or any of those cats. As much as I love that stuff, I don't really consider it "guitar" music. More like "steel string vibrations amplified through pickups and contact microphones and electronically/digitally processed" music. I'd have to make a separate list for that. And lest I be accused of bias, I also don't list classical or flamenco guitar recordings for the same reason. In terms of approach and technique, not to mention the different build and string material, it should be considered a different instrument. It's just not flat-picked steel-string guitar music, which is what most people mean.

Word. Quine's solo on "Love Comes In Spurts" could be my favourite guitar solo of all time.
Meanwhile, I think I'd be miserable on my desert island without this
