Grind was definitely there. I always wondered how a band like Assuck was so popular with so much of that scene. They toured with Reversal Of Man (which I sadly missed), but I think that trad. grind has always had one toe in the punk kiddy pool. I understand growing up with screamo... I think I was more involved in crust, but there are certain bands that I think are still pretty brilliant from that general screamo scene, mostly that fell into the retardo-genius name of emo-violence, like In//Humanity, The End of the Century Party, and CombatwoundedVeteran. I suppose that's a different thread. But yes, I agree that grind definitely influenced a lot of those bands, Napalm Death being an obvious intermediary.dialectics of shit wrote:Thanks, really enjoyed reading that post. I'll write more when I'm not pressed for time. But I will say I still listen to tons of screamo (everyone from Welcome the Plague Year to Tristan Tzara) and think it holds up quite well, but that could have something to do with how I grew up on the stuff and got into black metal after the fact. You didn't mention grind(core) which I think can be seen as an intermediate genre between screamo and bm. I would say NP's sound contains grind elements.

Not sure how that emoticon should be taken, but personally I did not really enjoy the latest Om. I wanted more heaviness, less airy-ness.
Re: the IHM metal thread
Huh, yeah, saw them in Chicago a while back at a Wire mag/empty bottle 'fest (maybe I'm imagining this) and remember being non-plussed, but I haven't heard any recorded material. I never got into Sleep, though, so who knows -- more out of not hearing enough than dislike...This is PRE wrote:Not sure how that emoticon should be taken, but personally I did not really enjoy the latest Om. In other news, the Antediluvian/Adversarial split just came out on Nuclear War Now (a label that is increasingly getting more out there and interesting). Going against my usual inclinations to wait until I have a physical copy in hand (which I'm doing for Cross hatches and Songs about Nothing fwiw) I'm currently streaming it at NWN! bandcamp: http://nuclearwarnowproductions.bandcam ... rial-split So far, so good. Holy jebus, the drum solo that begins "force of suns of adversary" reminds me of some kind of primitive early Milford Graves free jazz bashing. What a weird and great band. Pushing death metal through a wormhole into who knows where... I haven't been more excited about a metal band since Ride for Revenge.
Also, new Pseudogod on Hell's Headbangers is out on vinyl. Maybe I'm the only materialist vinyl nerd here, but I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the expanded artwork and the gratuitous gatefold. Bleh. If I'm going to spend dwindling cash on an album, it might as well be a visually stimulating artifact/memento of a culture and moment in time.

Re: the IHM metal thread
I like Sleep fine (at least Dopesmoker) yet never really got into Om, but their previous work at least held my interest more than the latest. Saw them live once and as much as I appreciate a band getting a good groove going, it was the gig that wouldn't end, ugh.
Sort of a vinyl hound myself, much as I hate to admit it -- I bought the aforementioned split sight unseen (even went for the die hard version) and also NWN!'s vinyl version of Through the Cervix of Hawwah released a week ago along with a few more goodies. Has to be one of my favorite metal labels along with Profound Lore.

I've got enough heaviness to keep me going elsewhere. I think the new Om is outstanding. This is PRE wrote:Not sure how that emoticon should be taken, but personally I did not really enjoy the latest Om. I wanted more heaviness, less airy-ness.

Ordered that Adversarial/Antediluvian split too a couple of days ago.
I've also been heavily immersed in Deathspell Omega the last couple of weeks. For some reason I never really checked them out, I did superficially, when FAS came out, but I was mostly interested in death metal at the time, after not following metal for some years, and I listened to FAS in a brick and mortar shop, but I didn't buy it. Anyhow, I got FAS 2 weeks ago, and it has been playing none stop since. Got Paracletus a couple of days ago, and now that's on heavy rotation. Both albums remind me of De Mysteriis Dom Satanas in a way. Not a bad thing, on the contrary. All the hype does seem to be true, there among the very best albums of the last decade I guess. (Not sure about all those satanic metaphysical bloated lyrics though, but haven't really dug into them.)

I can confirm that their new EP, Drought, is more greatness in the vein of Paracletus.

New Krallice record out August 25 (later on vinyl), Years Past Matter. Cover looks pretty sweet. NOT on Profound Lore this time around... apparently it "didn't work out", but they may work with the label again in the future -- or not.
Re: the IHM metal thread
Sorry if this has been addressed in here, but I'm curious to check out some South American metal and would love some recommendations. I'm not super knowledgeable about metal at all, I pretty much just know (and love) the obvious classics. My fav black metal band is probably Abruptum, and my favorite Death Metal band is Autopsy, if that helps at all (probably doesn't).
This thread is awesome btw, Tanner rules.

Re: the IHM metal thread
that is a tough question since a good portion of black metal releases are demos... moonblood has the best ratio of winners imo.
2012 has been a rough year for bm... sorting through the insane amount of usa/depressive/blackgaze/post bm releases, that i can not stand, but i have found a few things that i like.
carthaun - brachland
alerion - vii sanctvaires
aufschwung - Цена Жизни
cataplexy - devangelight
entartung - krypteia
flame of war - long live death!
kaevum - natur
nemesis occulta - bleak
ostots - heriotzaren bidezidorrak
the rain in endless fall - weald of introspection
totale vernichtung - die pechschwarze artillerie
ulfhethnar - reawakening the wrath of yore
wolfthorn - the cold descent of eternal winter

Re: the IHM metal thread
there's Sarcofago and Vulcano, albeit it being old stuff. I don't really know of any other SA metal, but there's this whole BTC latino scene in the US, I talked a bit about Odz Manouk and Tukaaria above, both above excellent. and all in the form of rereleased BM demo tapes btw, and they're not blackgaze/depressive/post-BM, so there you go.dave quam wrote:Sorry if this has been addressed in here, but I'm curious to check out some South American metal and would love some recommendations.
it's probably obvious, but I can't resist mentioning Sepultura's Arise and Chaos AD. 21 and 19 years old already. Stellar. Chaos AD for sure is a desert island pick, such a stellar album. It doesn't age, still sounds as fresh and aggressive as back in the days. Igor has pulled of one of the best drum jobs ever on that one. really, really sad that they didn't live up to it afterwards.
best thread on the board, yes

Mystifier is a good South American BM band— at least the first two albums are good.

Apropos of none of the above, been finding myself listening to Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult a lot recently.

Of the BTC I'd also recommend the Muknal demo, and Axeman's Arrive (which I think Tanner mentioned already.)schiksalgemeinschaft wrote:there's Sarcofago and Vulcano, albeit it being old stuff. Re: the IHM metal thread
Haha! Thanks, dude -- I'm glad you're checking some of this stuff out. I think Sarcofago (particularly their I.N.R.I. album) is pretty amazing and their influence cannot be overstated. I'm not really in the know about a lot of what's going on down there, but there's a ton of different stuff out there to check out(and it feels like there's always a new killer band coming from Bolivia or something), a few I've liked lately (mostly death metal, however): Masacre from Columbia ("the devil speaks in tongues), Mortem from Peru, Hades Archer from Chile, and Necrobscure from Brazil. Oh yeah, I really do like Goatpenis from Columbia (?) who are really fucked up war/black/offensive shit (I think every song on their last album was about various evil sounding weaponry and odes to genocide). Of course, the huge black metal band right now is Inquisition, and while currently living in the US, were originally from Columbia, I think. They're worth checking out if you haven't, if simply for the triumphant riffs and robot frog vocals...dave quam wrote:Sorry if this has been addressed in here, but I'm curious to check out some South American metal and would love some recommendations. Woah, it looks like beefbeefmeat has got you covered -- talk about obscure shit. It is a tough question-- but for my money, the best new demo I've heard lately has been Radioactive Vomit's "Witchblood" -- crazy war/black/death nastiness from Canada. And Grave Upheaval's demo.... oh, and Sperm Of Antichristdave quam wrote:Also, what are the best black metal demo tapes? Jammin Gorgoroth's right now

Re: the IHM metal thread
started to listen to a lot of BM again, mainly Walknut (a name that makes me giggle) and Austere from Australia (I think). also ordered a bunch of BTC tapes and finally got around to listening to the Carpathian Forest CD from 2007 or something that I had yet to listen to since I bought it on release day (mainly for the awesome metal-box packaging). It's a lot of fun... fat guys in corpsepaint - always a winning move

More South American metal: I've always been fond of Krisiun from Brazil, Black Force Domain is a classic.
