Re: list your free jazz favorites
My favourite free jazz album is New Dance by Anthony Ortega. Not many people bring it up but it is a beautiful record. It is one of several classics on the legendary (to me, anyway) Revelation Records label, and is now available on a Hat Hut CD.

Now available: Morton Feldman - Crippled Symmetry: at June in Buffalo, performed by The Feldman Soloists (Eberhard Blum, Nils Vigeland, Jan Williams)

Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

Re: list your free jazz favorites
woah lots of really good stuff posted thanks!
the warne marsh and anthony ortega albums on revelation records are fantastic!
Muhal Richard Abrams - levels and degrees of light was great. i should have enough records to check out until winter now
not really freejazz but i fond memories of listening to lonely woman by masayuki takayanagi when i first moved to the city... would like to find some freejazz with a similiar guitar style.

no one is like Takayanagi but maybe check Sonny Sharrock-Ask The Ages.beefbeefmeat wrote:not really freejazz but i fond memories of listening to lonely woman by masayuki takayanagi when i first moved to the city... would like to find some freejazz with a similiar guitar style.
also, check some of Otomo's recent jazz releases, he studied under Takayanagi and that project is basically an implicit tribute to Takayanagi.
Re: list your free jazz favorites
anything with Rudiger Carl on tenor sax

I'd say this is my only real issue with IHM - that free jazz or EFI is some how not "cool" enough or unrelated to the key interests here where metal and pop music is totally OK.Jesse wrote:beef,
here's a forum much better suited to address your inquiry: http://freejazz.org/
i spent many years amassing and enjoying the free jazz, if you want to move to a pm, i will suggest some stuff.

I don't think it is easy to make an interesting free jazz record right now, but it does happen.
Right now I am really into early Joe McPhee albums, "Variations on a Blue Line", "Graphics", "Glasses", "Black Magic Man", etc.
I am also listening a lot to the Cecil Taylor Unit that made the "One too many Salty Swift & Not Goodbye" + "Live in the Black Forest".

I duly noted your posts - and it was not directed at you, sir. I am going to order the new Erst in a min. Re: list your free jazz favorites
brotzmann sextet - nipples
moore/surgal/winant - piece for jetsun dolma
moore/surgal - lydia's moth/not me (lydia's moth is very pretty)
magic sound of fenn o'berg (1)
AMM - newfoundland (maybe not free jazz? don't really make a hard distinction on it)
butcher/hemingway - buffalo pearl. this album is monstrous
just came to bill dixon recently, the vade mecum stuff sounds quite fresh and odd to my ears.

I would say this implicit influence is worth noting in the case of Kazuo Imai as well.jon abbey wrote:also, check some of Otomo's recent jazz releases, he studied under Takayanagi and that project is basically an implicit tribute to Takayanagi.
Really? I've always preferred his accordion playing!fslmy wrote:anything with Rudiger Carl on tenor sax

shin'ichi isohata is also a junior scholar of the takayanagi school, it's worth listening to his music.RFKorp wrote:I would say this implicit influence is worth noting in the case of Kazuo Imai as well.jon abbey wrote:also, check some of Otomo's recent jazz releases, he studied under Takayanagi and that project is basically an implicit tribute to Takayanagi.

Re: list your free jazz favorites
i listened to "solo works" and "how we will change" by kazuo imai... hearing these two recordings makes me really happy that i made this thread! i will have to check out his collaborations next.
the only shinichi isohata i could find was collaboration with otomo yoshihide that was pretty heavy on the improv side of things, but still good. i did watch him doing solo guitar on youtube and enjoyed it. where can i find some of his solo recordings?

The only one who came close for a brief time was Ray Russell...this one in particular:

Has anyone mentioned Don Cherry's Mu?
A lot of wonderful stuff already mentioned...I wouldn't know where to begin...(lists ain't my bag...
