Not surprised no response here. I think the issue is there are many topics on the subject and it's been years since it's been discussed.
Definitely check out the old threads. Here is one: http://ihatemusic.noquam.com/viewtopic. ... =free+jazz

beef,
here's a forum much better suited to address your inquiry: http://freejazz.org/
i spent many years amassing and enjoying the free jazz, if you want to move to a pm, i will suggest some stuff.

Re: list your free jazz favorites
Oh but why not.
Definitely Bill Dixon, the Soul Note/Black Saint box is incredible value.
Three others I still play:
Fire Music by Archie Shepp (that's like a Duke Ellington shred). Tons of Pharoah Sanders, but for starters Black Unity (that's like an In A Silent Way shred). Machine Gun by Peter Brötzmann for the title track which has a killer garage rock shred passage.
All of that is pretty composed music btw.

Re: list your free jazz favorites
I'm not sure if you jut want recommendations or simply our favorites, but what the hey...
Check out Henry Threadgill and specifically his amazing trio with Steve McCall and Fred Hopkins, Air (although quite a bit of composition is in there, but they blow most trios in that ilk out of the water).
I still dig a lot of Joe McPhee.... Nation Time and Tenor stick out to me now, but he's got loads more albums, which I like more often than not. I dig ballads once and a while, and unlike brotzmann you actually want to hear McPhee play them.
I still really enjoy some Frank Wright stuff, check out The Center of the World quartet ( I think their Unity album is pretty easy to find on ESP). "Your Prayer" is pretty killer id-up-your-ass playing, as well . The album he released with the Blue Notes is actually pretty entertaining, but don't think about it too much. I guess you could level that criticism on a lot of the genre. Fucking dada-lite poetry and action painting ruined a lot of this stuff by trying too hard to make it smart. Fuck smart sometimes. I digress.
What else? I really enjoy Lowell Davidson's stuff ( the little that's out there). Poignant, bruised -knuckles piano -- unsung but really lovely. His ESP stuff is great.
I enjoy weirdos like Jemeel Moondoc, Arthur Doyle, Marzette Watts, and Giuseppi Logan a lot, as well, but I hesitate to outright recommend any of them. But they are all idiosyncratic, often daring, often blundering sax men, that I still invite into my apartment after they fall drunk on my doorstep.

Re: list your free jazz favorites
my favorite Ayler release was Albert Smiles With Sunny, recorded on the same day and with the same trio as Spiritual Unity, the full show that Prophecy comes from:

also Stefan Jaworzyn/Alan Wilkinson-In A Sentimental Mood seems to get overlooked a lot:

i guess a little of both... i am trying to branch off and find some new stuff/styles that i am not familiar with. i do enjoy space (i suppose developed from listening to a lot of eai) but i don't want to be limited to that.Tanner wrote:I'm not sure if you jut want recommendations or simply our favorites, but what the hey... .

Re: list your free jazz favorites
A few records I don't think have been mentioned (some freer or jazzier than the others):
Anthony Braxton – Dortmund (Quartet)
Don Cherry – Complete Communion, Symphony For Improvisers
Sun Ra - Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold, Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
Ornette Coleman – Dancing in Your Head, At the Golden Circle, Chappaqua Suite
Mike Osborne, Harry Miller & Louis Moholo – All Night Long
David S. Ware – Godspelized
Schlipenbach Trio - Pakistani Pomade
Evan Parker, Barry Guy, Paul Lytton - At the Vortex
Roscoe Mitchell - Sound, Congliptious, Nonaah, Snurdy McGurdy and Her Dancin' Shoes
Muhal Richard Abrams - Levels and Degrees of Light
Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre - Humility in the Light of the Creator
Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages, Monkey-Pockie-Boo
Last Exit - Noise of Trouble, Köln
Air - Air Lore
Ganelin Trio - Concerto Grosso, Ancora da Capo
Horace Tapscott - The Dark Tree
Hal Russell - NRG Ensemble
Frank Wright - Your Prayer, Trio
And these aren't free jazz per se, but open-structure jazz with some free or freeish soloists, which you'll probably like if you haven't heard them:
Louis Moholo – Spirits Rejoice!
Dave Holland – Conference of the Birds
The Trio (John Surman, Barre Philips & Stu Martin) - The Trio
Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic
Julius Hemphill - Dogon A.D.
Gerry Hemingway - Marmalade King, Demon Chaser
Anthony Braxton – Dortmund (Quartet)
Don Cherry – Complete Communion, Symphony For Improvisers
Sun Ra - Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold, Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy
