i officially pronounce this line as my favorite review line of all times. It is from Our Frans reviewing the cd 'Un Lieu Pour Etre Deux' on Copy For Your Records (performed by Barry Chabala & Ben Owen) which is great BTW:
' ...I have no idea if Antoine Beuger is a real person, or the band name chosen by Barry Chabala (guitar) and Ben Owen (synthesized tones, field recordings)...'
' ...I have no idea if Antoine Beuger is a real person, or the band name chosen by Barry Chabala (guitar) and Ben Owen (synthesized tones, field recordings)...'
Re: wandelweiser
The trademark FdW reviewing style. repeatedly blowing my mind. I fell in love with that sentence too.
The grammatical rules associated with diagrammatic reduction become apparent by considering a more tractable diagrammatic representation, applied to the Windsor knot in Fig. 8. - Fink & Mao, Tie knots, random walks and topology, (Physica A 276)

Re: wandelweiser
old news. they are named after a Beuger piece inspired by The Ballad Of Cable Hogue, which Les Rallizes Denudes has also named a release for. i've heard neither on account of how awful that film is
torn, toiled and troubled

Re: wandelweiser
Is Vriezen a paid-up card-carrying member of Wandelweiser now, Luka? News to me. Thanks for the link. You should try and get hold of him playing Tom Johnson's Chord Catalogue - that rocks.

Re: wandelweiser
Carried over from the other thread...
and; (b) this may be where the problem is for some.
His earlier work (say Mind is moving 1) seems to be preoccupied with the meticulous placement of sounds in space. There is no narrative and no flow. In a way reminiscent to Akiyama's early sparse acoustic work, the sounds exist on their own and given time they morph a perceptual space, alive, coexisting, conversing with the listener.
With the newer work (starting with Harmony Series 11-16, but most evidently with the newer discs) there is a much stronger emphasis on musical composition, where sounds are given distinct roles within a predetermined structure. In a way sounds are undebatable and are no longer in conversation with the listener. This, I feel, is the "musicality" you are referring to.
While I find Pisaro's choice and sequencing of sounds exceptional (Fields Have Ears 1, on AT, is a masterpiece), I tend to feel that this direction is not dissimilar to a lot of other music produced right now (especially with the use of field recordings), which inevitably brings Pisaro's music outside the Wandelweiser aesthetic and closer to the scrutiny of the listener's own musical preferences.
Well, the first part of that sentence (outgrowing) is true as far as Pisaro's music goes. But I find the second part a little odd as: (a) this is the I Hate Music forumjon abbey wrote:...but there's also a lot of fantastic and new music being made in that vein/area. I'd even maybe argue that the best of it is beginning to outgrow its roots and has become much more 'musical' in the last few years while still being connected to its origins...
