over the last year or so, I've purchased much of my new music from one or two websites on the Internet, though I still visit some local shops now and again for good used deals.
but, there's lots of music I see mentioned here that those websites and stores do not carry, or do not restock.
I know Erstwhile carries a lot of the Pisaro stuff I'm interested in finding, and I've seen some of the Feldman and Cage stuff I'm interested in for sale on Jazz Loft's website, but there are many records that only seem available from the labels that release them. Or they seem completely out of print, though I can't find a website that confirms it.
so, where do you go looking for your music? I know it probably sounds silly, but I don't use Paypal for various reasons, so finding places that take credit cards is a huge plus. I'll happily write checks once I've settled on buying two or three different things, though.
I've thought about jumping into the Discogs sea, but that looks a little dangerous, especially since I'm prone to tossing too much money at stuff I'm having a hard time finding... more than once, I've found out that the music was available elsewhere for much cheaper.
any suggestions? are there places I should absolutely stay away from?

You have your various reasons, and they're not necessarily silly, what are they? I find Paypal's customer service decidedly impressive (I'm designated a single human contact out of their HQ in La Vista, Nebraska) given the alternatives in buying stuff overseas from an American perspective, so much so I use Paypal to pay individual non-US contractors much larger amounts of money at my place of work, ergo circumventing $30+ wire fees. Sorry for the aside. Other Music helps me keep my checking account trim, as I'm a huge sucker for a real record store.
MMMS fills the in the weirder blanks, but I do a lot of online purchases from the labels themselves.

I tend to buy FLAC downloads from boomkat, sometimes I buy from bandcamp.com or directly from artists.

I can't afford to buy very much, but I always try to buy at least one cd/tape if I go to a gig.

Among the 28 vendors where I got my CDs this year, Erst got the lion's share of my CD purchases (24), way ahead of Drone, Amazon or Jazz Loft (4 each, although I'm expecting a shipment from Drone real soon now). All of the other vendors this year were either direct from labels or merch at events.
Re: Paypal, it's by far the cheapest way I've found to make purchases in Euros. I bought some scores from a Japanese composer a while back and had to send a bank draft -- cheaper than a wire transfer, but still very high fees on both sides. I really wished paypal had been an option. Some of my European vendors add 5% paypal charge to cover their fees, but it's still the cheapest and easiest option I know.
