Is Sound 323 shut?
Re: Is Sound 323 shut?
as i know pretty much yes ... but you can get some nice wine from mr Wastell nowadays
Re: Is Sound 323 shut?
I have a fond memory of the one time I got to go to the shop around 2002-3 or so. I was kind of blown away about being surrounded by music that until that time I had only read about or could only order from Forced Exposure or Eclipse, and I just spent a lot of the time looking around while listening to some dude complain to the guy behind the counter about the Opaque show at The Vortex (which I was at and quite enjoyed) the night previously. Opaque were too grungey or dronish or didn't have saxaphones or something. Anyway that was cute and snarkish. Anyway I bought some pretty personally game changing albums that I can still remember: Sachiko M/Tilbury/Hautzinger/Dafeldecker's "Absinth," Taku Sugimoto's Guitar Quartet, M. Behrens "4 structural studies" (or something typically Behrens-ish titled), and Repeat's "Pool". My mind was blown at my student's hostel that night as I listened to them in my discman (holy shit, remember those?!). Anyway, nice dude who worked there who put up with my dirty, scraggly bearded American ass. I think it was Wastell. Long story short-- too bad it's gone.

well I ordered a cd from there about 7 months ago and I still have not received it, so I would say yes it is shut.
Re: Is Sound 323 shut?
The physical shop closed in 2006 - Second Layer Records took over the full premises, after originally being in the basement for a year or two beforehand. Sound 323 continued with mail order but the website appears to (have) be(en taken) down. Mark is still selling stuff on discogs as mpw and, as luka said, he's running a wine and fine food shop in Winchmore Hill (I think).

Is Mark still active musically - last thing I got of his is Kiss of Acid with Marhaug, but that was recorded five or six years ago, even if it just came out (Monotype - nice) - or is he using that tam tam as a plate to serve paella on, or whatever it is they eat in Winchmore Hill?

Mikroton just put out a Wastell/Rhodri Davies disc, but that might be some years old also, not sure.

Dan, Mark played a gig in London a few weeks back with Joachim Nordwall and Jonathan McHugh, but an appearance is rare these days. He had a second child and is now running this shop:

Ah, but London's far too puritanical for such decadent fare, no?Dan Warburton wrote:Well, if there's ever an AMPLIFY in London, we know who's doing the cateringRichard Pinnell wrote:It's about six or seven years old, but its a good one.jon abbey wrote:Mikroton just put out a Wastell/Rhodri Davies disc, but that might be some years old also, not sure.

I managed to sort it out at last. He also confirmed that the shop is gone for good, but he is selling some pretty cool LPs on his discogs.faster wrote:Did you pay? Re: Is Sound 323 shut?
When i was in London i heard a distance voices telling me that somebody else may start a distribution since there is practically none now ... if it does happen hope it will treat labels and artists the way they should be (meaning paying them!). This public silence 'in the scene' around last years of Sound 323 operation is quite disturbing in fact
Re: Is Sound 323 shut?
agreed, it's very bad, and has only happened since Mark is such a nice, well-meaning guy as well as a long-time fixture in the scene and a great musician.lukaz wrote:When i was in London i heard a distance voices telling me that somebody else may start a distribution since there is practically none now ... if it does happen hope it will treat labels and artists the way they should be (meaning paying them!).
