FMP Calls it Quits
Dunno if this was reported on at all. Very sad news.
So Gebers triumphs over Schleif, with the upshot that he winds the label down? Why? At least she was keeping the stuff in print. Looks like that won't be done by anybody now.
TMM also didn't get any funding in 2009 or 2010 from the Berlin senate, a real downer, since under Schleif's patronage it was broadening its scope considerably.

RIP FMP. as I've recounted here before, that imprint earned a direct link to my wallet for many years.

Have you read the essays in the booklet accompanying the box, Alex? A very interesting read..negative potential wrote:Dunno if this was reported on at all. Very sad news.

Nah, haven't sprung for the box, because the only discs I really want are the Die Like A Dog and the Malfatti/Wittwer.
Why, is there stuff on the Gebers/Schleif rift, or do you mean more generally?

Yes to both questions - Felix Kloptotek's essay makes for a good read. I guess at some stage someone'll put it online.. can see why you wouldn't want to spring for the box! But apparently each of the 12 discs it contains will be available separately. Apparently. I'd get the Schlipp 4tet one too, that's very good. Happy shopping.

Yeah, the Schlippenbach Quartet/Trio doesn't get better than this, as I said here before. The only drawback is that about 4 minutes of music have been omitted from the CD.Dan Warburton wrote: I'd get the Schlipp 4tet one too, that's very good. Happy shopping.
Re: FMP Calls it Quits
And alas, looks like much of the FMP back catalogue might get OOP quite soon. Fenn music (apparently FMP's German distributor now) are doing a clearance sale, but some of the CDs are already marked as sold out: http://www.fenn-music.de/downloads/FMP% ... OG-PDF.pdf
I'm wondering if there is a chance that other labels may reissue more of the FMP's vinyl catalogue. Atavistic and jazzwerkstatt seemingly are out... I started listening to European free music around 1980, but my budget was very limited then (still attending school), so I had to be very selective when purchasing records.

Re: FMP Calls it Quits
first spin of the Schlippenbach Quartet CD and it is burner - maybe better than Hunting the Snake which is big favorite of mine from the same time period.
Re: FMP Calls it Quits
I emailed these folks to no avail, anyone else have any luck? Just need to pick up one of these discs, thanks.martin wrote:And alas, looks like much of the FMP back catalogue might get OOP quite soon. Cadence? Here is the current catalog, see pgs 165-166

Edit: Sorry, I shouldn't have even responded. I have not looked at FMP availability in 5+ years and now see how sparse it is relative to jazzloft, downtown music, etc. There is alway the IHM OOP thread.

Re: FMP Calls it Quits
the home of very many great Cecil Taylor records... sad news.
Re: FMP Calls it Quits
too bad, though not entirely surprising given the backstory.
box was too expensive for me, so hope the book materials will be available in online form some time. I bought 3 of the singles (Schlipp 4'tet, Globe Unity, and Radu/Wittwer duo - which Donald Miller always raved about to me {and it does live up to it}) - all of which are very strong.
one recent FMP title I've had no luck finding to order anywhere is the Chrismann/Gustafsson/Lovens "TR!O" disc. Anybody have any leads on that one?

Re: FMP Calls it Quits
there is a guy on discogs that has tons of FMP on sale. I got "London Air" and the incredible Leo Smith et al "Touch the Earth" from him about a year ago. The Trio is not listed on discogs, but maybe you can ask him if you use that site. Link here.AnxSnd wrote:one recent FMP title I've had no luck finding to order anywhere is the Chrismann/Gustafsson/Lovens "TR!O" disc. Anybody have any leads on that one?
edit:
it's also on sale at squidco.com
Re: FMP Calls it Quits
It;s available from amazon.de, including a few cheaper offers from market sellers: http://www.amazon.de/Tr-Christmann-Gust ... 125&sr=8-1AnxSnd wrote:too bad, though not entirely surprising given the backstory.

Re: FMP Calls it Quits
thanks for the leads, guys...
looks like Squidco will work best for me (and gives me an excuse to order "More 74" also...)
r.i.p. FMP - hate to see it go. Even their CD releases felt substantial in terms of liners, photos, recording quality, etc. They were a definitely a label to trust for a long time there.

Re: FMP Calls it Quits
From what I hear from Mr Gebers via Michael Rosenstein (whose enormous review of the box will be appearing in the forthcoming Paris Transatlantic Spring Issue), he's still running something called "FMP Publishing".. so perhaps some other treasures from the archive will see the light of day soon. Live in hope.
